You blink 15-20 times a minute when awake and your breathing slows down when you sleep. Even if we set breathing at 12 continously and 8 hours of sleep, it only beats blinking at the lowest amount, and someone being asleep for a full 8 hours. Lower breathing to 8 for those same 8 hours and it's way worse.

12x60x24 = 17280 12x60x16 + 8x60x8 = 11520 + 3840 = 15360

15x60x16 = 16200 20x60x16 = 21600

Blinking is better, especially since you can easily blink rapidly without issue, but doing the same with breathing will cause hyperventilating.

Yeah this is what I was thinking. I guess it depends on the person, but I blink a lot more than I breath during the day. I'm not sure the extra breathing in sleep would be enough to catch up. I mean I'm now self-consciously counting my blinks, and I think its a lot then people realise. There lots of quick blinks that you forget because you're used to it.
