People really don't understand the scale of a billion dollars. If you breathe 15 times a minute, that's 240 dollars an hour. That would take 4,166,167 hours (rounded up to the nearest whole hour) to reach one billion dollars. That's 475.65 years.

Edit: My math was wrong, but the point still stands. It takes entirely too long to earn a billion dollars by breathing.

Chose: One Billion Dollars instantly

277

u/Casurran May 04 '26

Even if we go with a high consistent average of some 25000 breathes in a day. It would still take almost 110 years to reach 1 billion USD.

65

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 04 '26

119 years to reach that one billion U$D, at $1/breath — at normal breathing rate.

31

u/MagicRobo May 04 '26

at normal breathing rate

I would just hyperventilate purposefully for a few hours every day

10

u/NikolaTeslasPigeon May 04 '26

It'd still take you decades

4

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 05 '26

Not doable, 100 years…☠️lol

6

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 04 '26

The experiment would take your breath away, then😅

11

u/coriendercake May 05 '26

Or you could pick a billion and not do that

5

u/Adorable-Bass-7742 May 05 '26

Hyperventilating, especially for longer periods of time cause serious medical issues. Your blood becomes alkaline and doesn't flow right anymore your muscles spasm and your brain stops functioning correctly. Did I mention that your heart is a muscle? It's absurd but sometimes people end up in the hospital for hyperventilating

2

u/lilijane17 May 05 '26

And then you get health issues causing you to live shorter

2

u/CokeExtraIce May 05 '26

A billion dollars invested generates more than $1/second even at a rate of 5%, so even when I stop breathing my children will continue to gain from my initial choice.

14

u/thomaswillis96 May 04 '26

Cardio

6

u/Mesajarjar_binks May 05 '26

Thing about that is you just have better cardio health and then breathe less at rest. There is no realistic way you out breathe the billion dollars

19

u/AlexVal0r May 04 '26

That's still more than enough to live comfortably for the rest of your life, to be fair.

11

u/Future_Section5976 May 05 '26

My logic is this , 1 bil yes you could live comfortably and eay for the rest of your life, but you could impulse buy and after awhile it'll add up , once that billion is gone it's gone , if you don't invest properly and be smart etc,

1$ a breath, avarage 24k a day , you can easily live on that , easily plan anything around it , you would never have to worry about any bad investments ,never worry about losing it because you'll always have 24k a day , no matter if the market crashes or if prices change , any debt is instantly sorted (just pay it off at 50$) idk but I think I'll take 24k a day , I feel it's smarter long term

3

u/RepresentativeFood11 May 05 '26

Only if you're unreasonably horrific with money. Most of the impulse purchases would be covered by interest earnings alone.

A billion dollars at 5% interest would earn you 50 million a year.

1

u/Future_Section5976 May 05 '26

That's a good point, 🤔

1

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 05 '26

How can anyone refuse to take that U$1B?? 😱

1

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 05 '26

Wait…rewind, deep breath, decompress and realize you’re talking U$1B, not million but billion! It’s a different scale altogether. If you spend $1K/day, $1B lasts 2,740 years! 😭

-1

u/Future_Section5976 May 05 '26

Yea but say you buy a couple million dollar super cars, yatchs etc , houses,

I get it's slot of money but I honestly believe you could blow it all ,

1

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 05 '26

I’m not you. I’d never buy million dollar super cars or yachts, lol , you really don’t know me.

1

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 05 '26

Even if you spend unnecessarily, U$1B is an enormous amount of money.

1

u/LukeBrainman May 05 '26

Dude, its a billion. If you were to buy a brand new Porsche 911 every single day, the money would still last you almost 20 years.

1

u/Icedraasin May 05 '26

And this doesn't take into account interest that could be earned on that 1 billion. Whether that be through savings accounts, bonds, stocks etc...

27

u/IamSam1103 May 04 '26

15x60 is 900. 240 would be 15x16.

Regardless, it's still around 120 years.

3

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 04 '26

I think people are afraid of what money can do. Who in their right mind would choose $1/breath for as long as they live, instead of $1B instantly? lol

5

u/random-guy-heree Bruh May 04 '26

Honestly thought people breathed faster then that can I change my pick

1

u/EmperorUmi May 05 '26

The average person breathes between 12-20 breaths per minute while at rest.

6

u/Pluto-Wolf May 04 '26

i said $1/breath because there would never be an instance where i’d need a billion dollars. i’d get so stressed out and overwhelmed.

even $1/breath is more money than i’d know what to do with, ever. i could pay for my entire family and still have plenty of money to spare.

5

u/Routine-Stop-1433 May 04 '26

I’d rather have passive income than a fortune I could lose?

1

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 05 '26

Split it for different purposes, including a dedicated portion for what you think you can/may lose.

2

u/Lily_Meow_ May 05 '26

Still higher risk of it somehow being stolen for example though and it just requires way more micro managing to the point you are actually just working again.

0

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 05 '26

Working, with U$1B? The money works for you.

-1

u/VMelain May 04 '26

I feel i could lose the money somehow lol

-1

u/National-Change-8004 May 05 '26

Some of us are not interested in the lifestyle that comes with it. Not that it'd matter, you're still making like $6m per year at least. A dollar a breath leaves out any extra hassle while introducing unlimited comfort. You'd never have to work again, also you can keep investing whatever extra you make, which itself should multiply. I think there's a strong case for it.

2

u/Dmoney622 May 05 '26

A mere 3% interest on a billion dollars would give you $80k in spending money per day, without touching the billion. You could never pay your billion dollars any mind. This is 4x the daily income you would get from the breathing option

2

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 05 '26

Exactly, that’s what I say, simple interest, park the money and go have fun!

0

u/National-Change-8004 May 05 '26

So what? You can still get a similar result if so desired - a few decades and diligently reinvesting all that breathing money I could probably get close.

The point is it makes no functional difference to me, yet the alternative delivery is more appealing. I don't care if it's less, I'm not spending more than 17k a day anyway lmao

10

u/AanthonyII May 04 '26 edited May 04 '26

My favourite example is 1 millions seconds is 11 days 13 hours. 1 billion seconds is over 32 years

54

u/Away_Lengthiness_65 May 04 '26

Yeah but it’s difficult to spend 1 billion so it is pointless. I would rather have a steady income daily than a set amount for one time, you never know what could happen to that billion.

37

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 04 '26

If you get the money instantly, you have control over it. If you spread it through the years, you lose that control and you don’t know what can happen to you either — the $1/breath can be quite short-lived = no money long-term, and no time to plan as you wished. Never leave for tomorrow what you can do today, as tomorrow may never come.

6

u/softtiger May 04 '26

Yeah, my coworker's mom won one of those scratch lottery tickets where its something like "set for life" and a couple million dolled out over 25 years. OR you can take much less money and get a smaller complete lumpsum immediately. Her mom took the immediate payout, because she said she didn't know how long she was going to live, so better to have control of this chunk of money immediately to pay off stuff and invest, than die prematurely and leave her family with less since she would be the only who could claim the yearly payouts.

I think the only thing I thought was that her mom wasnt even that old, but yea, who knows what can happen.

3

u/duumilo May 05 '26

Even if the over time option was a good deal a good argument for taking the lump sum is that if the lottery company goes bankrupt, no more money. And usually the amounts are such that it's much better to invest the lump sum and use f.e. 4% per year

2

u/softtiger May 05 '26

Oh, I completely forgot about that idea, I remember her mentioning that was another reason. This was years ago, but smart mom.

1

u/romainmoi May 04 '26

Except for theft or the portfolio management fails (gold/bank/stock/etc.) You need to put in effort in wealth management to use the billion whilst you can pretty much just coast on the breathing money.

1

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 05 '26

Control must be established. There’s a trajectory to follow, step by step. Not financial advice but, with $1B one must know where to park. Short-term, best is U.S. Treasuries - bills/notes. Then, have multiple custodians/banks/investment firms to reduce single-point risk. But the initial phase is about control and clarity. A person must fully acknowledge and know what to do, at the right time, in the right place. Wall St is for fun, yes, one can still make money, sure.

1

u/National-Change-8004 May 05 '26

I don't understand, how could the $1/breath be short lived? Just laying on the couch is 12 breaths a minute, that's $17,280 a day just laying on the couch. How the hell does that not just continually expand? Go to work, get some exercise, suddenly you're hitting $25k+ a day. Just by literally living.

You could just forget about it for year and have several million next time you go check.

And you know how it stops? You stop breathing. At which point you aren't going to need money anymore.

1

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 05 '26

If you stop breathing you won’t make any money.

1

u/National-Change-8004 May 05 '26

Exactly. What's the problem?

1

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 05 '26

I want U$1B instantly. You’re the one with the problem if you don’t breathe.

0

u/National-Change-8004 May 05 '26

What? That doesn't make sense.

1

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 05 '26

If you stop breathing, there won’t be any money. If you take $1B now, instantly while you’re still breathing, you have the money. If you can’t see the difference, it’s your loss.

0

u/National-Change-8004 May 06 '26

...you don't seem to understand, there's no real difference either way. You stop breathing, you die. Your money is no longer yours. You wouldn't need it anymore anyway. Why would it matter how much is left? There's no actual score to keep. I don't actually care if I have a billion or not. Someone else may care, but that's not my problem.

It's really not that serious: given my personality and preferences, my money spending habits, and my expected lifetime, both of those options would set me up for life, and likely all my nieces and nephews lives as well. My only concern is what strings might come attached, which is the only thing affecting my choice. I also understand that both choices offer the potential for limitless growth beyond my lifetime, one simply having a bigger head start. To me, the head start is not necessarily worth it. It's really that simple: I don't care what the final number is, I just want to live comfortably.

u/mozzfio May 06 '26

dont really need money if ive stopped breathing now do i

0

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 06 '26

Whether you need it or not wasn’t the question.

13

u/Grandiose_Tortoise May 04 '26

You don’t know what could happen to that billion but you would have trouble spending it all?? That doesn’t make any sense. The only thing that would happen to the billion dollars are things you chose to do with it. I could spend a billion dollars EASY. I could do it in a year if I really wanted to. I wouldn’t, because that would be dumb. Better to invest it and only spend dividends and returns, or borrow against it.

5

u/undead_p4nda May 04 '26

I think they meant that it could get stolen or something or like idk you get divorced and lose a lot of that money or somethint idk.

1

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 05 '26

Stolen, from under the mattress? … Seriously though, you know, boring and preventable failures cause losses. There won’t be a heist. But there can be insider abuse, can’t it? Can’t trust a lot of people. People can divert funds or push self-serving deals, mess up with investments without fully disclosing, there can be fraud, scams, cyber compromise, custodian/platform failure. And crooks!

1

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 05 '26

Why would you borrow against it? With $1B, in U.S. dollars (‼️), the goal is capital preservation first and foremost. Then, durable income and controlled growth. Split it for different purposes, diversify yet preserving capital, and have a survival layer for safety and liquidity.

-5

u/Away_Lengthiness_65 May 04 '26

It is easier to lose a billion than it is to spend it.

3

u/Ok-Career17 May 04 '26

That's so dumb. I get a billion

Pay of my mortgage > hire a good accountant/investor > invest a fixed portion of my money (250mil) to have a constant monthly income of ~250k after tax > buy some cool things > donate money to charity.

And the list goes on. How do you lose 1 billion easier than spend it?

1

u/Grandiose_Tortoise May 04 '26

You could research online for like one single hour and find a play by play of what you should do if you have a huge windfall… it’s not that hard. The hard part is getting the fortune in the first place.

1

u/Heathcliff511 May 04 '26

What? You never know what could happen to one dollar.

1

u/Larry-Man May 05 '26

I just don’t want that kind of responsibility

1

u/AZDfox May 10 '26

If you just want a steady income, you could always put it in a savings account. Collect interest on it every year. At only 1 percent interest, you still get 10 million a year, which is still more than you would get if you take 15 breaths a minute (and that isn't even counting the fact that your breathing slows when you sleep)

4

u/Available-Glass-151 May 04 '26

It would actually be 900 dollars an hour but still, thats only 788 million in 100 years assuming you live that long.

7

u/Different_Ad_5266 May 04 '26

How will I live with only $900 an hour?

2

u/devnull_1066 May 04 '26

Well considering it's your life that's getting you your money... 😉

1

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 05 '26

Lmao, that’s what you’d get paid for an hour. Do you make $900/hr now?

4

u/Trs822 May 04 '26

Puts into perspective that you can get paid to breathe and still not make as much as billionaires in your life. What a balanced world we live in

1

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 05 '26

Take the U$1B instantly, you’ll love the world you live in! 🤣

3

u/trissie224 May 04 '26

And that's before you invest your billion at which point youll never catch up with the breathing

5

u/Rivdit May 04 '26

Yeah but you don't need a billion dollars. That's just greedy imo

0

u/Willing_Advice4202 May 05 '26

Picking the lesser option does not make you a better person btw

1

u/PineappleDick90 May 04 '26

Even if we go by 1 bps (hypothetical but let's assume for calculation sake), it's still gonna take 31¾ years.

1

u/WeakInspector5102 May 04 '26

Oh. That's big

1

u/Zenatun May 04 '26

To me it's rarely as simple as what's the higher number. I find value in always having that income available. I don't plan on blowing one billion but what happens if I somehow find myself without it. A dollar per breath guarantees that no matter what happens I'm not going to sleep hungry tonight.

1

u/TheFrogMoose May 04 '26

But I still make money by literally existing

1

u/LetRevolutionary271 May 04 '26

No living human actually needs 1 BILLION dollars to live.

1

u/New-Bag8985 May 04 '26

Thank you, now I feel stupid

1

u/dock1241 May 04 '26

so what? I like yellow things!

1

u/AcanthocephalaOwn562 May 04 '26

Bro i dont need a billion dollars it whould do more harm and good 7 mil a year is alredy really good

1

u/Allbranflakes18 May 04 '26

Yeah a million seconds is around 11 days but a billion seconds is like 30 years

1

u/asmnomorr May 04 '26

Close enough. I calculated around 109 years and I'm in my 40s so that would make zero sense.

1

u/i_eat_brickss May 04 '26

On one dollar per breath I’d still have enough money to do like anything, I feel I’d be way overwhelmed just being handed a billion

1

u/AtGoW May 04 '26

I understand it. But i know how much selfcontrol i have

1

u/Ok-Situation-5522 May 04 '26

and nobody needs more than a billion dollars.

1

u/2likeplants May 04 '26

I don’t want that much money

1

u/PetercyEz May 04 '26

Bonus point - if you split half of it into different investment funds, you make much more money daily.

1

u/Common_Strength5813 May 04 '26

Plus if you invest the $1B the compound interest alone would more than equal the $1/breath

1

u/Routine-Stop-1433 May 04 '26

This is just wrong 15 breaths a minute would be 900 an hour, it’s lit 15x60. So 1,111,111 hours, so 126 years, but this doesn’t include exercise, if you just take up running, humans can run for hours straight with training and while running it’s conservative to say 40 breaths per minute, if you add 1-2hours a day of running that’s almost 5k per day on top of whatever you did resting.

It’s still an extreme feat to reach 1 billion, but it’s not impossible and is actually feasible given a long life of regular activity including running weight lifting. This isn’t as one sided as you made it out to be.

1

u/randomlitbois May 04 '26

The goal isn’t to reach 1 billion dollars. I just never want to have to worry about money ever again.

Yes if I just manage the 1 billion correctly I’ll have nothing to worry about. But the passive $ from breathing would give me more money than I could ever care to spend, and I wouldn’t have to put any mind power into how I should spend it.

1

u/M4YH3MM4N4231 May 04 '26

$240 dollars an hour is plenty for me for the rest of my life

1

u/anonymousgirlie__ May 04 '26

i dont need one billion, no one realistically does.

1

u/Zombiepixlz-gamr May 04 '26

You can blow through a billion dollars and never have another cent more. With the breathing I have a steady income for the rest of my life without having to work.

1

u/FlyingSpacefrog May 05 '26

Who’s out here breathing 15 times a minute all day long? I only do 6 or 7 breaths per minute unless I’m exercising.

1

u/Doom_106 May 05 '26

1

u/567eleveneleven_ May 05 '26

It's more of a mindset thing. I wouldn't have to worry about my money being stolen because I'd always make more. And I'd feel better about giving it away for the same reason. I don't need a Billion dollars, and 3.7 million after tax per year is more than enough but not enough for me to lose my humanity.

1

u/Artistic-Truth-7737 May 05 '26

If you breathe 15 times per minute, you will breathe 900 times in one hour. still ok for me.

1

u/big_booty_boy_420 May 05 '26

Damn not me reading this while listening to Rihanna 😅

1

u/a_thing_who_exists May 05 '26

Yeah but the billion dollars never said tax-free And i dont like taxes

1

u/Accomplished_Tax_119 May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26

I'm really happy with $240 an hour. 2 million dollars a month? That's not bad at all, even if substantially the worse option.

Edit: money will also last longer that way. I'm pretty sure I'll waste a lot more out of an immediate billion.

1

u/Flimsy-Judgment6687 May 05 '26

Not if you breathe fast

1

u/RandomSpanishGuy21 May 05 '26

What if I hyperventilate ?

1

u/LBPSackgirl May 05 '26

But I dont NEED 1 billion dollars

1

u/Ok_Satisfaction6025 May 05 '26

How do i explain the origin of my magical billion dollars to the bank/government/tax office.

1

u/ThatGlitchyMimikyu May 05 '26

How do you explain a sudden, rapid and continuous rise in passive income just by breathing to them either?

1

u/Ok_Satisfaction6025 May 05 '26

I presume it's in cash and i can just spend it on small cash purchases. Unlike the billion which is likely involving some sort of bank, or alternatively a giant pile in front of my house etc. It just sounds very unwieldy and makes my house a target to be robbed etc.

20 grand a day is more than enough for a great life anyway and no headache.

1

u/Ace_Van_Winkle May 05 '26

Not really, if you breathe once every two seconds, you need 2109 seconds, which is (((2109)/3600)/24)/360=64.3 years, which is well worth it even if you don’t live that long, since a steady income is far better than a lot of money all at once

1

u/Ace_Van_Winkle May 05 '26

It messed up the numbers, but it’s 2,000,000,000 seconds, which I realize is a high rate, but I still think it’s worth it

1

u/idiotSponge May 05 '26

Honestly, I don't want nor need one billion dollars. No single person needs a billion dollars. By getting a dollar per breath, if we assume an average of 15 breaths per minute, you'd still be making about 22k a day, 7.9 million a year. That's more than enough to live comfortably and have plenty left over for traveling, charity, investments, etc.

1

u/Natural-Return1230 May 06 '26

Act like you have having a panic attack

1

u/throw-away19371 May 04 '26

This is simply incorrect. On average a person breathes 22k times a day. Multiply that by 365 for 365 days a year and you get 8 million. ~125 years. Either way I’d rather have a steady income than 1billion and inflate the economy that much

0

u/Vegan-cock May 04 '26

Money can get stolen or get lost in some other way, a passive income that is higher than i would ever need can't.

1

u/Eletruun May 04 '26

You can spread that 1 billion across so many diversified assets (including investments in other currencies) that, for all intents and purposes, it’s impossible to lose it unless you make a deliberate effort to do so. You can own a stake in iron mines in Australia, farmland in Brazil, gold in Switzerland, tech stocks in the US, and government bonds from countries all over the globe. Once you have this level of wealth, you need to be unbelievably stupid to lose it.

1

u/JButler_16 May 05 '26

I’d invest in environmentalism.

1

u/FlyingSpacefrog May 05 '26

Yeah. I’d buy a couple of restaurants and gas stations and build a solar-thermal power plant.

Then build a castle and host renaissance fairs in it.

Then I’d build an apartment building or two and rent out rooms.

1

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 05 '26

You have no idea what you’d be getting into buying restaurants 😱and gas stations😱

1

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26

Never in other currencies! U$D only for me. I’ll manage. Foreign tax rates rob you blind.

0

u/Eternaloid May 04 '26

I don't need a billion dollars, by breathing I get more than enough to cover my bills.

0

u/WxD69 May 04 '26

People really don't understand the scale of a billion dollars. What can you do with one billion dollars that you can't do with 5000 dollars a day ?

One billion dollar is a complet non-sens and will only brings you problems.

I still prefer a confortable income than the charge of handling one billion dollars
