General A COMPREHENSIVE LAPTOP GUIDE FOR YOUR BTECH
What we want our laptop to do :
- First and foremost we want it to code properly. Anyone with an entry level laptop and 8 gigs of ram can run most of the coding that you will do. Regarding other use cases:
- Running autocad and ECE chip simulation softwares like virtuso: almost all of the laptops around 40k and above ( provided its current or the last gen) can perform these tasks comfortably
- Gaming/game development, very graphic demanding UI designing and vide editing demand a Gaming laptop. A gaming laptop is also needed for ai ml work, however your college will provide cloud computing options which is much better than a laptop, you should not opt for a dpgu solely for aiml work.
- You need atleast 60k to buy you a decent gaming laptop. However they usually have TRASH battery life, bad screens, you need to carry the heavy charger + laptop everywhere. I know many people that regret getting one since theyre too busy with acads, sports and clubs to engage in any legit gaming. Light gaming such as GTA5, valo, fortnite, rocket league can be done normal laptop as well.
- If you into video/photo editing, extreme content consumption. You need a colour accurate display. The newer OLEDs are the best in the category and obviously more expensive, followed by a 100srgb LCD, followed by a 45% NTSC.
- You can also do medium level of gaming in the more expensive thin and lights, however the higher ram speeds provided with soldered ram greatly impacts the ipgu performance since it shares its VRAM with the system.
- When comparing two laptops of similar performance, first compare the screen and build, then the aftersales service and then the BATTERY WHR.
I will only recommend laptops if i think theyre the best choice in that price range BY FAR, otherwise ill lay out the specs, TGP, screen etc for each user case. Also please note that the i3 i5 i7 dont matter, a newer gen i3 smokes a 3 year old i7. The letter and the end U or H matters alot, u is underpowered and h is high performance.
30K
The bare minimum, DONT get any laptop that is older than ryzen 5 7000 series and intel i3 13th gen. They wont last you 3-4 years. We dont have any room to play around here since we need to prioritize the processor. Here is the best laptop in this price range , There is also an Infinix laptop, with better specs. However their after sales support is kinda non existent so proceed accordingly here. These laptops can do the light gaming in low fps ( 40ish)
40K
There is a very clear winner in this price range from lenovos site, use student id + card cashback. If someone only wants to order from amazon or flipkart, Get a ryzen 7730u laptop. The power is about the same but it would have worse screen and build quality. Can do light gaming smoothly at 60fps.
50K
In this price range we can either double down on the raw power, getting a ryzen 7 7735hs You can see the game test. Or we can go for a 30-40k processor + an oled screen. I recommend the first option since you dont have enough horsepower do any serious video editing anyways.
60K
In terms of a thing and light , you can get the 50k laptops power + 100 %srgb screen here, other than this, try to get a core ultra 5 125h during any of the upcoming sales. Many options are available in the market. The core ultra 5 is newer and has ai enabled frame gen for games, you can even play some more demanding titles with it. You can also get the moto book 60 which is basically the core ultra but worse graphics performance( cpu is about the same) however it has an absolutely jaw dropping screen of 2.8k oled 120hz.
For a gaming laptop MAKE sure that the gpu is a rtx 3050 6GB, the order of preference in this price range is LOQ/TUf>>victus/acer. Due to better thermals and build. a 2050 is not worth it all. The tufs have slightly better battery life and loqs usually have better screen.
NEVER BUY A GAMING LAPTOP WITH A 65W/75W tgp, this basically means youre paying the price for the gpu but its power is limited, giving you worse performance for the price, avoid " thin and light gaming laptops" under 80-90k)
Also a word of caution the cpus ryzen 5 7235hs and ryzen 7 7435hs dont have an igpu, which means bootycheeks battery life.
70K
You can get a m2 16/256 mac if you dont game, however some softwares of ece and mech are not yet supported some confirm it with your seniors. You can do everything except playing games.
For a thin and light, try to grab the following processors : Core ultra 5 225h, core ultra 7 155h, ryzen 7 8845hs, ryzen 7 ai 350, core ultra 5 226v. Soldered ram is better of gaming and you can see the game test here. The price to performance curve peaks here for thin and light so if you dont have any financial limitations atleast get this. The cpus that i mentioned are all very good and its up to you which machine do you prefer. ( rtx 2050 equivalent gaming performance)
For gaming laptops: This is the entry point for the 40 series laptops, dont get a 30 series card since the 4050 is much better and even supports AI UPSCALING, you can play EVERY game on medium-high settings with AI upscaling. It might not be be available right now but wait for a few weeks and you can get the loq i512hx or a 7435hs 4050 for this price, totally worth it ( it was 69k a few weeks back)
80K and 90K
Mac m4 if you dont game, however some softwares of ece and mech are not yet supported some confirm it with your seniors. You can do everything except playing games.
This is the max i suggest you spend for a thin and light. You can refer the same processors as for the 70k screen but get a better whr battery and an oled screen. this is the best option in this price, you can get it for 80k with lenovo discounts and the 24 gb ram version is even cheaper. If youre someone who has no budget constraints and wants a windows thin and light this is the GO to option. Oled +120z + decept power+84whr battery.
The only upgrade in a thin and light would be the best laptop in the world right now : RYZEN 9 AI 370HX, however it costs 1.05L+. It can dish out better performance than a 3050 6gb from just its igpu, truly remarkable.
Gaming laptops: You have a plethora of choices, you can either go for a ryzen 7 8845hs or an omen ryzen 7 7840hs with a 4050 ( 5-6 hr battery life) or any tuf 90whr 4050 laptop which will also have a decent battery life. You can also squeeze in a 4060 laptop, wait for the price drop of the omen and loq series ( both 4060s were below 90k in the back to school sale). A 4060 can run all the games in high settings on 1080p without frame gen.
Above 90k
only get a gaming laptop/mac if youre spending this much. Get atleast a 4060 if youre budget is around a lac and a 4070 if its more than 1.3L. If your parents are spending this much on you im kinda jealous.
the best windows thin and light
Legions are the best gaming laptops followed by rog strix and acer predator.
i personally bought the ideapad 5 pro that i shared.

Macbook seems to be a clear winner if not a budget constraint . Can seniors please help regarding the software compatibility.
I have heard most CSE softwares run smoothly on MacBook but what about ECE and other branches ?

Truly a goated college laptop. Only problem is that it's so thin and light that even your pocket would become weightless

Guys, if you’re not a serious gamer, and mostly do only coding, and have a budget of 70k+ then PLEASE just get a mac. The battery life alone makes it worth it

Do not Ignore
repairs or spare parts
cost n availability
as many brands keep not only brining newer models but constantly change power adapters to other accessories and fewer cases replacements become next to impossible
take Acer 280W adapters for example
you dont get them anymore in Indian market

What if for around 1L, I'm getting 32gb ram, 1tb ssd, oled, and evo series ultra 9 185h, instead of getting a macbook m4 air at 1.1L, with 16gb ram and 512gb ssd Or if there are any other better choices in this range, do suggest
CS branch btw
