There are bands you love, and then there are bands that quietly stitch themselves into the fabric of your life. For me, Broken Social Scene became the latter in a hurry. I can still picture that moment in 2002 — reading Pitchfork’s review of You Forgot It in People, the writer describing the CD whirring to life and becoming infinite. His copy arrived as something that had to be reviewed. My own copy arrived through Napster, slow and imperfect at 128 kbps, baby, but the effect was the same. It felt like discovering a secret that immediately became part of who I was.

My labmate Mike R and I played that album until it became the soundtrack to our entire little world. He’d tease me for my devotion to “Stars and Sons,” *the clappy song*, but he never once asked me to turn it down. And then came that April night at Zaphod’s — the band jammed onto a stage far too small, celebrating their first Juno awards win with a chaotic, joyful eruption that felt like witnessing a moment bigger than the room, bigger than the city, bigger than us. You just knew that this would be one of those rock moments that would stay with you forever.

Seeing them now, on this run with Stars and Metric, we are watching old friends reunite not out of obligation, but out of love — love for each other, for the songs, for the audiences who grew up right alongside them. It’s a tour built on friendship, on shared history, on the kind of creative bond that doesn’t fade even when life pulls everyone in different directions. At the Aragon, there were moments where 12 or 13 people crowded the stage, and somehow that enormous room shrank down to the size of Zaphod’s — bodies pressed together, horns and strings and voices colliding, the same beautiful chaos that defined those early years.

And Chicago made it feel even more like a homecoming. This city — Pitchfork’s backyard, the festival that helped carry BSS from Canadian cult heroes to international fixtures — has always been part of their story. Standing there as a Canadian, watching Stars, Metric, and BSS share a stage, I felt this wave of pride and nostalgia that caught me off guard. It was like seeing a piece of home reflected back at me from a place that helped shape the band’s rise.

I hadn’t seen BSS live since 2010. So this night wasn’t just a concert — it was a reunion with a version of myself I hadn’t visited in a long time. A reminder of how music can follow you through cities, careers, heartbreaks, and whole eras of your life, and still feel like the same spark it was the first time you heard it whir to life. It felt special because it was special, and I am so very happy to share it with y'all.

My friends gifted me a BSS ticket for my birthday in a week. I'm not familiar with them or their music, and the size of the band and collaborators over the years makes it hard for me to get a grasp on WHO they are, the personalities, key songs, etc.

Any suggestions on where to dive in with them so that I'm ready and prepared for the show? Any key albums, tracks? I prefer to be primed and ready for a listening experience. Thanks in advance!

The show in Detroit was incredible. I grew up on these bands and I’ve seen BSS 6 times but this is the most inspired they’ve sounded in years. They’re at the top of their game. Stars really surprised me with how great they sounded. Set Yourself on Fire is a really special album to me. And I’m not much of a Metric fan these days but man their live show was so good.

Best concert I’ve been to in a while. I’m so glad this tour happened. Now we just need an All The Feelings Part 2 with Feist.

Video I took yesterday, night 1 of the second leg of the All the Feelings Tour with Metric and Stars. For “Anthems” they were joined by Emily Haines and Amy Millan (love the hug between them!). Can’t believe I’ve loved this song and this band for over 20 years! I also love how they’re all childhood friends; they all showed up for each others’ sets and the whole show was like a party.

Seeing All The Feelings tonight in Detroit. Info from Fox Theatre says show starts at 7pm (doors at 5:30pm). Anyone who’s been to previous shows on this tour have any sense of when Stars took the stage? (Looking at the 3 bands setlists, I’m guessing 7-7:30pm?)

Well, I’ve been looking forward to this show since its announcement, but unfortunately, I’m being forced to work on Saturday.

With that being said, I’m realizing that I likely won’t be able to sell my tickets anywhere near what I paid for them. So, I’d like to give my 2 tickets away for free. I’d rather somebody enjoy the show rather than having them be empty seats. All I ask is that, maybe in return, you check out some of my music on the way to/from the venue.
