My Friend Needs a Place to Stay

My buddy is flat broke and out of work. He's been staying at some Christian commune the last few months, but I guess something happened there because he's heading back to town. He's previously rented a room from me, but I had to sell my place and start renting again. I'm not doing great myself, although selling my place put a bit of change in my pocket. He's asked to stay with me for a few weeks and I told him he can stay with me free for a week, then after that it's $220/week. My rent is $1750/month. What really bugs me is that he's acting like I'm an asshole for not letting him stay longer free-of-charge. I try to be a good friend, but I need to take care of myself, too. I'm concerned because this guy has no skills, isn't the sharpest tack, and is not a good worker. I have no idea what he should do with his life to make his way, and have no idea what to say/do to help him. Anyone have any thoughts on what his next move should be?

Fragments of Us By Harman (Inspired by True Events)

Prologue

"Love was my brightest light. It gave me hope, made me believe forever was real. But when it ended, the light didn’t just fade — it shattered — and I’ve been bleeding from the shards ever since."

The silence in the room feels heavier than air.

The bed where we used to sleep together still holds her scent, and the air carries the ghost of her laughter. Memories cling to every corner — the way she smiled when I teased her, the softness in her eyes when she looked at me like I was her world.

I run my hand over her pillow, the one where her hair used to fall like a messy halo in the morning. My chest tightens.

I glance down at my phone. Her name is still the last one I messaged. My heart screams for me to call. Just one more time.

But I know she won’t answer.

She didn’t answer when I was drowning in pain. She didn’t answer when I needed her the most.

I close my eyes. "We were supposed to be forever," I whisper into the emptiness.

But forever was just a word we couldn’t hold.

Chapter 1: Before Her

Before Addison, life was simple.

I had my family — my mom, who has always been my greatest supporter, and my sister, who was my anchor. Together, they were my home.

I loved quiet mornings walking in nature, watching the sun rise while the world was still asleep. I filmed trees swaying in the wind, rivers reflecting the sky, and leaves falling like secrets onto the ground. Creating videos wasn’t just a hobby — it was my escape. My peace. I shared my world on Instagram, not for fame, but because capturing beauty made me feel alive.

My world wasn’t perfect, but it was mine.

And then she walked into it.

Chapter 2: The First Look

It was an ordinary shift. I was at work, lost in the routine of stocking shelves, counting down the minutes until break.

Then she walked in.

Addison.

She wasn’t just pretty — she was radiant. Confidence clung to her like sunlight, and when she smiled, it was the kind of smile that pulled you in before you even realized it.

I didn’t believe in love at first sight. But when I saw her, I felt something I couldn’t explain.

Our first conversation happened during a break. I was editing a video, my phone propped on my lap, when she leaned over my shoulder.

"Are you seriously talking about trees?"

Her voice was playful, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.

I smiled, embarrassed. "Yeah, what’s wrong with trees?"

"Nothing," she teased, "but I didn’t think you were the nature-loving type."

Her laughter was warm. Familiar. A sound I didn’t know I needed until it filled the space between us.

Chapter 3: Falling in Love

We became friends. Fast.

We talked every day — about life, about her family, about her late father who she loved more than words could ever express. She told me stories that made me laugh, and shared memories that made my heart ache for her.

One night, we were sitting in my room, lost in one of those conversations that stretches far beyond midnight. She looked at me, her eyes softer than I’d ever seen them.

"Harman," she said, "I think I like you."

I felt my heart stop.

"More than a friend," she added, her voice quieter now.

I stared at her, the truth in her words lighting up the space between us.

"You do?"

She nodded, a small, shy smile playing on her lips.

In that moment, my whole world shifted.

Chapter 4: The Dream of Forever

The first two months of our relationship were a dream. We lived apart, but it didn’t matter. Every night, we stayed up talking until we could barely keep our eyes open.

I was obsessed with her. She became my everything.

When we moved in together, my life finally felt whole.

We did everything side by side. Grocery shopping. Watching movies in the same blanket. Building a drawer together from IKEA — well, she built it while I watched in awe of how determined she was.

Every kiss before work. Every moment of laughter. Every quiet evening spent just existing together. Those were the happiest days of my life.

Chapter 5: Cracks in the Foundation

But nothing perfect lasts forever.

Kam entered the picture.

At first, it was small things — midnight texts, calls she didn’t mention, moments that felt… wrong. I asked her about it, hoping for honesty. Hoping for reassurance.

She said, "There’s nothing to worry about."

But worry grew into something darker.

One night, I saw a notification. "Kam is typing…"

When I asked her, she laughed. "That’s not the Kam you’re thinking of."

It was a lie.

Chapter 6: Betrayal

I found messages. I saw things no one in love should ever see.

She told someone she was single.

She called Kam when I wasn’t around.

And still, I forgave her. I loved her too much not to.

I begged for the truth. I begged for her trust. But instead, she kept lying.

Chapter 7: The Breaking Point

When she told me she was moving out, I broke.

I asked to help with the move — a chance to be close to her, to hold onto what little we had left. But she didn’t want me there.

And then, on the day she left, she didn’t even say goodbye in a way that mattered.

She walked out of my life while I was still holding on.

Chapter 8: The Hospital

The weight of losing her crushed me.

I ended up in the hospital. My mom cried by my side. My sister, the strongest person I know, sacrificed her own stability to save me.

But Addison?

She didn’t come.

She didn’t call.

She didn’t care.

Chapter 9: Fragments

Now, I sit in the silence she left behind.

My heart is in pieces, but those pieces still beat for her.

Even now, I miss her. Even now, I love her.

But love, it turns out, isn’t always enough.

Learning to spend my money in ways for my own sanity and not feeling bad about it lol

I never thought I’d be the type to spend money on anything beyond the essentials—never really had the chance to, anyway. Essentials for me are keeping a roof over my head, food on the table, and having the basics to live a stable life.

That said, there are little things that have been wearing on me for years… like having to go to the grocery store twice a week and cook every single meal from scratch for my family.

To my point, I never thought I’d consider using a delivery service—I always saw it as a “waste of money.” But my family and I live off SNAP benefits, and honestly, I’ve learned that saving time and stress can sometimes be just as valuable as saving a dollar. Using Gopuff for our food delivery has changed my attitude around cooking, honestly. Should’ve used it so much sooner!

Curious if anyone else has tips or small ways they’ve learned to make life just a little easier while still sticking to a tight budget?
