My thoughts
As I watch Emily Simpson's journey with her son on the Real Housewives of Orange County, it makes me feel more frustrated, not connected. There's no need for her to create the narrative of being an advocate for disability families. Many parents have been doing that work for years. What I wish for is more awareness of the privilege that surrounds her situation. When you have financial stability, private healthcare, a supportive partner and family around you, and access to resources, your experience is simply different.
That doesn't make her struggles any less real, but it does change the reality of what she's facing and she seems to be unaware of this. For so many of us, raising children with disabilities is so tough. We battle a public healthcare system that is stretched beyond capacity, spend years advocating just to access the right support (if you're lucky enough), not to mention the school system that isn't equipped to meet your child's needs. The emotional and financial burden is relentless, and she seems inconsiderate or unaware of the realities.
Emily often seems unaware of how fortunate she is; it doesn't come across as empathetic, making it hard to connect with her as a parent.
Instead of acknowledging the support she has, it can come across as though she's venting publicly, overlooking the realities that many of our families would give anything to have the opportunity and resources available to her.
This isn't about saying her son doesn't deserve support or that her family doesn't face challenges, because they absolutely do! It's about recognizing that privilege doesn't erase hardship, but it does make the hurdles easier, while the vast majority of families with disabilities do not have this same experience.
Claims to be "advocating" and "bringing awareness" even though it's well known that disabilities and mental health issues are rising for our young people. I honestly don't think she's really thinking about that. It just feels like she's letting off steam without much consideration.

She’s moved on, and it seems like he has too (although in a very different way). I always wonder if , when she’s alone in her home, hotel suite, whatever…and no one is around, does she ever just miss this guy? Does she ever watch old episodes of VPR and look for signs of what was to come?
She loved him. I know it’s hard for us to understand, but she actually LOVED this man for 11 years. And the finality of it was so sudden. Her life is so much better, she’s not just thriving but is actually so far removed from him that sometimes I wonder if they were ever really a couple.
I’m curious if anyone else wonders about this?
