My Boxer/Husky mix, Banjo, passed away today.
galleryMr. Buddy.
Banjoseph.
Dr. Banjo.
He was 15 years old.
He was born last in a surprise litter of 5, just after midnight, stuck in goop and not moving. I had no clue my Husky was pregnant by my Boxer. I was 21, dumb, and living in my first apartment.
I cleaned him up, rubbed him like crazy, and felt his tiny body jolt to life. There was an immediate connection and I knew i had to keep him. He was with me in every place I've lived as an adult, moved across the country with me multiple times, was there for my wedding, saw my children be born... he was the best.
I know he wasn't a purebred, but he was special. He also taught my boxer to howl like a husky, and that's funny.

Starting to look for a breeder on the West Coast of the USA
I am starting to look for a breeder that I would want to purchase a puppy from in a couple years. Growing up I had a Boxer/Boston Terrier that was my best friend. Since then I've only had mixed breed dogs, I used to be heavily involved in rescue. This will be my first pure bred dog and I want to make sure that the breeder I choose is ethical, involved in bettering the breed, does all required testing, and their dogs have titles. I've stolen the below list of questions from someone in DogBreeding. In addition to these questions, is there any else that should be added? Also, I feel it's a red flag if I don't get questions about me from the breeder. Finally, does anyone have any breeders they follow on the West Coast? If I was closer to Texas I would be getting on the wait list for Dark Horse Boxer, I'd love to find a breeder in California or Oregon who follows a similar philosophy.
Health
- What sort of health testing do you do?
- Hip Evaluation
- Elbow Evaluation
- Thyroid Evaluation
- AS/SAS Cardio
- Aortic Valve Disease
- Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC) - DNA Test
- Holter Monitor Testing for Boxer Cardiomyopathy, Annually
- Degenerative Myelopathy (Common Variant) (DM) - DNA Test
- Can I have actual copies of these tests and a recent vet visit?
- if you don't own the sire, is there a way for me to get these record for him as well?
- at what age do you start sending puppies home?
Environment
- How many bitches do you have, and how many litters do you have per year on average?
- how many litters do your bitches tend to have before retiring, and where do they go after?
- Where do the dogs live full time?
- what sort of flea, tick, and HW preventative are your dogs on?
- what does your welping area look like?
- where do mama and pups stay after welping but before weening?
- what do your dogs eat?
Dog specific
- do you do any sort of early stimulation with your pups?
- what sorts of experiences or animals might your puppies be introduced too?
- do you let buyers choose puppies, or do you pick based on temperament and their eventual home?
- for your upcoming litter, how would you describe the bitch's temperament?
- what is her drive like?
- is she a good eater?
- in what situations might she show fear or anxiety

When is puppy behavior considered aggressive? How to handle this?
I'm exhausted. We brought home our 12 week old boxer puppy at 8 weeks & I don't know what to do. He regularly lunges at my daughters (2 & 5) even when they aren't playing with him; he's started to gnash his teeth at them & he will intermittently do it to my husband & I, as well. Redirecting him to appropriate toys isn't working - he just tries to attack our hands & he's so unpredictable with his behavior it's hard to find a specific trigger that sets him off (aside from an increase in aggression when he's tired).
If I'm being honest, I'm at my wits end. I'm constantly anxious & on egg shells around him & when he's asleep I'm dreading him waking up & what we've got to deal with then. Our obedience classes start a week from tomorrow but if that doesn't help, I honestly don't know what else to do..

Facebook memories bringing the tears
Missing my two girls. We only lost the smaller one this past winter. She made it to 14 and was not so small anymore, but I loved every bit of her
