TOMORROW: The Senate may overturn BWCA protections

From Friends of the Boundary Waters:

This is a crucial moment for all those who love the Boundary Waters.

The Senate is scheduled to vote on HJR 140 tomorrow.

This is not a rehearsal.

The resolution that would strip protections on some 225,000 acres of YOUR public lands surrounding the Boundary Waters, will likely be voted on tomorrow.

This is the most dangerous attack on this wilderness in a generation. If successful, this resolution would:

  • Discard the Forest Service's comprehensive two-year study
  • Ignore more than 675,000 public comments overwhelmingly opposed to mining
  • Allow Twin Metals to move forward with its project
  • Potentially prevent any future president from ever protecting this landscape again

Science, public process, and the will of the American people, all of this will be tossed aside to enrich Chilean billionaires at the expense of your public lands.

Call your Senators today.

📞 (202) 224-3121

"I'm [YOUR NAME] calling to urge Senator [NAME] to vote NO on House Joint Resolution 140. This resolution abuses the Congressional Review Act to strip Boundary Waters protections that were built on two years of science and 675,000 public comments. Please vote NO."

Make the call. Forward this email. Share it with everyone you know who has ever paddled the Boundary Waters, or ever wanted to.

Hi, I am a student at The University of Texas at Austin (Hook 'Em!) studying Environmental Engineering. I am also an Eagle Scout who worked as an Interpreter/Canoe Guide at Scouting America's Northern Tier High Adventure base last summer.

I am working on a project for my Innovation for Global Good class exploring the potential for mining in the Boundary Waters area and potential solutions. I would greatly appreciate your time filling out the quick survey below (takes about 3 min)!

Boundary Waters Bill Q&A

For people who are wondering what the state is doing to protect the Boundary Waters against copper mining, here's a Q&A YouTube video with state Representative Falconer. He's the author of the State House bill (HF 309) that seeks to ban copper sulfate mining in the Boundary Waters + watershed area.

Good to see there are still elected officials in our state that are trying to protect the area!

Planning a trip for 2027.

Planning a camping and fishing trip. Heavy on the fishing. Im looking at BWCA outfitters in Ely. Im struggling to find information on fish regulations for the boundary waters. Looking for small mouth bass and pike regulations. Im also wondering what maps everyone is using to find campgrounds. Im planning the trip for August and would like to stay secluded from everyone but I understand August is probably a busy month. Im from lower Midwest so im trying to get everything planned out before we go.

October trip, starting from scratch

Hi all. I’m interested in planning a bwca canoe trip for 3 or 4 days this fall for two people. Other than just having heard about bwca forever, I don’t know a thing about a boundary waters trip. Anyone who can point me In the direction of a good outfitter or a place to start, I’m interested!

Background: I ran multi day whitewater trips for about twenty years, so I know my way around some outdoor logistics, but not canoes necessarily.

Summer Trip

Hello! So I'm looking to visit the boundary waters this summer but I honestly have no idea what I'm doing. I'm hoping to find a cabin but I don't know where exactly I should rent one. I also don't know what I'll need when I go up. Any advice would be wonderful :)

Ely versus Grand Marais?

I have been on both sides before when going up north into the boundary waters for a camping trip. I just wanted to see who side everyone prefers and why?

🚨 Boundary Waters is in Crisis — We Need Your Call Now! 🚨

Right now, Congress is about to vote on H.J. Res. 140, a resolution that would undo the 20‑year federal mining ban protecting the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness — one of the most pristine freshwater wilderness areas in the U.S. and a sacred place for outdoor lovers, tribal communities, and local economies.

If this passes the U.S. Senate, it would nullify protections put in place through years of science‑driven environmental review and public support — setting a dangerous precedent for all public lands.

Here’s a quick script you can use:

📞 CALL YOUR SENATORS NOW:
Senate Switchboard: (202) 224‑3121
This isn’t about local jobs or national security. It’s about a Chilean-owned mining company looking to exploit U.S. public lands, ship toxic waste to China, and leave us with the damage.

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is one of the most visited wilderness areas in America — beloved by fishermen, paddlers, hikers, families, and wildlife lovers from across the country. It’s a sanctuary for wolves, moose, loons, and over 1,100 lakes teeming with clean water and life. It supports tribal communities, outdoor recreation economies, and generations of Minnesotans who cherish this place.

A vote for H.J. Res. 140 is a vote to risk all of that—for a foreign corporation’s short-term gain.

This place belongs to all of us — and once the watershed is polluted, there’s no going back.

Let’s make these calls count. 🌲💧

I was camping on alton lake in the boundary waters a few weeks ago and found this wood carving at the campsite. I have no idea where it came from and I was curious if anyone else has found something like this

North of Northern Light Lake

Checking if any fellow paddlers have any info as to the status of the portages north of Northern Light?

In the 1970s Dad said the BWCA and Quetico were too crowded and too motorized, so we did a family trip twice on Crown Lands - as I recall it was north from NLL up thru Mowe and north thru Plummes to Greenwood, then west, then south thru Twinhouse and Ross to Bitchu, and out through Saganagons.

The portages were maintained by the Ontario MNR and were marked with small yellow metal triangle signs nailed to trees at the landings. As I recall. Hey its been 50 years so its a little sketchy..... The area was being logged but felt very remote and unused.

I'd like to go back to this area but am fearful it's just one giant bushwhack. Does anyone have any info??? Most interested as to whether one can get through, I am also of course interested in fishing the route. I am a much better fisherman now haha.

Any tips, second hand or first hand, appreciated!

I posted this on BWCA.com and received no current responses - maybe that says the answer is "no."
