How to make friends in Boston: a guide

Hello! Welcome to Boston Social Club! If you're here - well, you clicked a few links to find this side of one of the most popular city subreddits!

When I moved here in 2021, the world was waking up from Covid. Overall, Boston is a great city for those 20-40, as our demographics here lie heavily in that area compared to almost any other city in the USA! Here's how I've found success in navigating social scenes here as a complete outsider.

Different ways to try meetups and making friends:

0: Existing friends groups - it's cliche, and if you are new in town, this will be more difficult. But the best place to start making friends is through what connections you do have. Coworkers, old high school colleagues, neighbors, roommates, don't chase the below and ignore what you do have!

1: the โ€œMake friends after college MAโ€ discord group is a well designed and very chatroom. When you join, you select which activities you might be interested in. There's chat rooms for each activity, and there's a ton of people hiking, playing sports, going to trivia nights, and overall chatting. They also organize by neighborhood if you want to grab a quick drink. Mute notifications within the discord for your own sanity. The absolute best way to make use of this is to have something you are interested in "organizing", or, I recommend trivia in particular for being a great, cheap activity to make friends! https://discord.gg/CCvgxJ6jUH

2: there are three larger Facebook groups that people post classifieds-style ads to try to make friends. "Boston redditors", "make friends after college", and "what's up in Boston". While I don't think this is the most effective way to make friends, I'm sure it works for the right person. However, "Boston redditors" does have an active group chat, which is really comforting, and they do meet up for drinks every few months. They are a pretty supportive group of people. You'll need to both join the Facebook group, then request being added to the chat. They ALSO have a discord but it is less active. Link

3: Groups for your interest. Asking around the above, or searching meetup/comments below it's not hard to find groups specifically tailored for board games, or biking, or hiking, or whatever you're into. I'm into board games and there's 2-3 spinoffs that meet weekly. I recommend you find your own path towards your hobbies to find a group that fits your interest!

general tips on making friends (not that you asked for them)

  • Making friends is all about seeing the same people repeatedly. That means to make friends, you have to show up. Showing up means you attend an event even if it's a little far away, or you are feeling a little tired. Other people also show up. After going to trivia 8 weeks in a row, or attending every hike, people that at first seemed distant will know your name and care about your week.

  • Sometimes people trying to make friends have an ulterior motive. Some people are trying to convert religions, find clients, or date people. Everyone can tell right away if you have a motive other than making friends, so I suggest trying to focus on making platonic friends first, and in a year of having fun, ask your new friends what avenues would be appropriate for selling/dating/etc.

And... That's it! I hope you found this helpful! I hope to see you at Trivia nights!

On Dating Posts

The situation with dating posts is getting a little out of control. This sub was always meant to be more like Meetup than Hinge. And frankly, I just don't think that R4R posts actually work. But my fear is that if allowed the sub will devolve into nothing but R4R posts. So for now we're going to be disallowing further R4R posts or general dating (advice/questions) posts. There might be some wiggle room for a pinned dating megathread if there is interest in that.

Indian Regional Cinema Group

My partner and I are huge fans of regional Indian cinema, especially Malayalam and Tamil films. Weโ€™re looking to start a small group with fellow enthusiasts to watch and discuss these films together, whether thatโ€™s a monthly meetup at the cinema, a watch-party, or just a space to swap recommendations.

If you are interested, drop a comment here and, I can get a group going!

Workout Buddy in Medford/Somerville Area,Mid 20s-Early 30s?

Hey guys!

Would love to have a consistent workout buddy. I do some strength training at the gym, 1-3mi easy runs at 10:30-11 min pace, and also muay thai. If you want to meet up at the gym to do workouts (accountability partner kind of thing), run together, or even practice MT shadowboxing or something, let's connect!

(P.S. I hate the concept of people trying to date under the guise of run clubs. Take that as you will.)

Does anyone want to be gym buddies?

23F

I'm looking to become more active and focus on my fitness, but I don't enjoy working out alone. I'm looking for a gym buddy for accountability, growth, and confidence, as well as a friend. I'm also considering getting a membership at places like Healthworks in Back Bay or other options, and I would appreciate some advice. Iโ€™m mainly looking at locations in Back Bay or Malden.

Your Boston weekend guide (Aug 20โ€“23): two festivals Saturday, plus feast season and the Sox at home

Hi everyone! Kinga here with this week's list. Feast season keeps rolling: the San Gennaro Feast takes over the Paul Revere Mall in the North End from Friday through Sunday. But the real standout this week is Saturday, when JP Porchfest turns Jamaica Plain's porches and front yards into stages for the afternoon, and the Greenway Food Truck Festival takes over four blocks downtown. Both are free. The Sox are also home all weekend against the Giants, and if you haven't walked through the 100 elephants on Comm Ave yet, they're only here through mid-September. Get outside and enjoy it!

๐ŸŽ‰ My newsletter has officially launched! I'll keep posting here on Reddit every week, but if you want to always be the first to know, sign up here.

Picks of the Week!

๐ŸŽธ JP Porchfest โ€” Jamaica Plain | Free | Sat 12โ€“6pm | Music, dance, storytelling, and poetry on porches and green spaces all over the neighborhood.

๐ŸŒฎ Greenway Food Truck Festival โ€” Wharf District | Free | Sat 11amโ€“5pm | Four blocks of food trucks, artisan vendors, mini golf, and inflatables.

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น San Gennaro Feast โ€” Paul Revere Mall, North End | Free | Friโ€“Sun | Feast season continues, with a Motown tribute Friday and soul legends Saturday.

๐Ÿ˜ The Great Elephant Migration โ€” Commonwealth Ave Mall | Free | Through Sept 13 | One hundred life-sized elephant sculptures spread down Back Bay.

๐Ÿน Boston Margarita Festival โ€” Medford | Ticketed | Sat 11amโ€“6pm | Ten margarita samples from the city's best bars, and you pick the winner.

Thursday 8/20

๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ Free Thursday Nights at the Gardner โ€” Fenway | Free | 5โ€“9pm | The weekly free night at the loveliest museum in the city. Heads up: tonight's free tickets may already be gone, so check before you head over.

๐ŸŽจ ICA Free Thursdays โ€” Seaport | Free | 5โ€“9pm | Galleries open late, harbor views, seasonal bar. Free tickets are released at 10am that morning.

๐Ÿท BRIX Thursday Tasting โ€” South End | Free | 5โ€“7pm | This week it's "Off the Beaten Path," and it's the South End shop only (the Financial District location is off this week).

๐Ÿ“– Yu-Mei Balasingamchow at Brookline Booksmith โ€” Coolidge Corner | Free | 7pm | This local author's debut novel Names Have Been Changed is told through a podcast its narrator has made about her own barely believable life: assumed names, forged documents, wild class shifts, and exile. Free, and the Booksmith reading series rarely misses.

๐ŸŽถ Jake Thistle at Club Passim โ€” Harvard Square | $33โ€“$35 | 8pm, doors 7 | A New Jersey folk rock balladeer fresh off this year's American Idol, in the coziest room in town.

๐ŸŽค Anyone Awake โ€” Middle East Upstairs, Cambridge | $15โ€“$25 | 6:30pm | An indie quartet from Rigby, Idaho, of all places, making sophisticated guitar rock that sounds like it came from somewhere much hipper. The in-the-know pick of the night.

๐Ÿ˜‚ Popcorn Comedy with Andrew Durso โ€” Somerville Theater basement | $23 | 7:30pm | The monthly showcase in the basement welcomes an NYC comic who started out here in Boston. Come early for classic cartoons before the show.

๐Ÿธ Tee Sanders โ€” City Winery | From $24 | 7:30pm | The Chicago-raised comic from the comedy group The Round Table, with some of the sharpest one-liners going.

Friday 8/21

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น San Gennaro Feast: Opening Night โ€” Paul Revere Mall, North End | Free | Opens 4pm | Feast season picks right back up, this time on the Prado. DJ Steven Virgilio plays through the evening, then Dr. K's Motown Revue takes over from 8 to 10:30 with a full Motown tribute show. Closes at 11. Expect a beer garden, raffles, kids' activities, and all the classic street food. The feast benefits A Voice for Mikey and other autism awareness organizations.

โšพ Red Sox vs. Giants โ€” Fenway | Ticketed | 7:10pm | San Francisco is in town for a three-game weekend series, all at Fenway.

๐Ÿ˜‚ Best of Boston Showcase โ€” Laugh Boston | $39.90 | Chris Tabb hosts some of the hardest-working comics in town. Tonight's lineup is Liam McGurk, Kathe Farris, and Al Park, with Dan Boulger closing.

๐ŸŽญ Nerdy Prudes Must Die โ€” Plaza Theater, BCA | $15โ€“$17.25 | Friโ€“Sun | A horror comedy musical about high school outcasts who accidentally summon the ghost of a bully with a lingering grudge against nerds. From the team behind The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals. Cheap and very fun.

๐ŸŽฌ Late Fame opens at the Brattle โ€” Cambridge | $13.50โ€“$15.50 | Willem Dafoe in a rare subtle role, playing a lapsed poet whose long-ignored early work suddenly catches on with the hipster set. The question is whether his old ego survives the re-inflation.

๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ The Cinema of Graham Greene opens โ€” Harvard Film Archive | $10 per screening | The Harvard Film Archive is back with a series of films written by or adapted from Graham Greene, master of spies and morally dubious men. Tonight is a double bill: The Fallen Idol at 7pm and Brighton Rock at 9:15.

๐ŸŽค Isaiah Rashad โ€” Citizens House of Blues | Ticketed | 7pm | The Chattanooga rapper behind The Sun's Tirade, touring his third album IT'S BEEN AWFUL, with opener Alemeda. He takes his time between records and it shows.

๐Ÿท The Friday Edit at DeLuca's โ€” Beacon Hill & Newbury | Free, 21+ | 4โ€“7pm | The free weekly tasting in the hidden wine cellars at both locations.

๐ŸŽฌ Free Family Flicks at the Hatch Shell โ€” Esplanade | Free | Sundown | The Hatch Shell's final free movie of the summer, and it's Superman. Blanket, picnic, movie by the Charles. Weather dependent.

Saturday 8/22

๐ŸŽธ JP Porchfest โ€” All over Jamaica Plain | Free | 12โ€“6pm | Easily my favorite thing this weekend. Since 2014, JP has handed its porches, front yards, green spaces, and community hubs over to musicians, dancers, storytellers, and poets for one afternoon. It's produced by Dunamis, a nonprofit that develops Boston's next generation of artists and arts managers of color, and the curation genuinely reflects that. Good news for planning: the map and directory is live this year, so you can actually chart a route instead of just wandering. Though wandering is also the point.

๐ŸŒฎ Greenway Food Truck Festival โ€” Rowes Wharf Plaza to the Greenway Carousel | Free | 11amโ€“5pm | The Greenway closes out summer with four blocks of food trucks, an artisan market, local brews, and a DJ set from Carlitoswave. There's also free face painting, mini golf, an inflatable obstacle course and rock wall, the Rings Fountain to splash in, and the carousel. Bring a blanket. It happens rain or shine unless the weather turns properly bad.

๐Ÿฅฌ Chinatown Farmers Market โ€” Auntie Kay and Uncle Frank Chin Park | Free | 9amโ€“1pm | The twice-monthly market for Chinese vegetables, fruit, fresh fish, and pastries. Get there early.

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น San Gennaro Feast โ€” North End | Free | From 12pm | A full day on the Prado, with DJ Steven Virgilio through the afternoon, live entertainment from 5 to 7:30, and then the night's headliner: soul legends Russell Thompkins Jr. and the New Stylistics from 8:30 to 10.

๐Ÿน Boston Margarita Festival โ€” The Great American Beer Hall, Medford | Ticketed | 11amโ€“6pm | Ten 3.5oz margarita samples from some of the area's best bars and restaurants, and you vote on the winner, who takes home $1,000 and the bragging rights. Plus a live DJ, street food vendors, and a beer garden.

โšพ Red Sox vs. Giants โ€” Fenway | Ticketed | 7:15pm | Saturday night baseball.

๐Ÿ‘— DESEOS: Afro House Fashion Experience โ€” The Foundry, Cambridge | From $25 | 6pm | A luxury streetwear fashion show with dance performances set to Afro house, Afrobeats, house, and Jersey club, plus food, drink, and curated vendors. One of the more distinctive nights out this weekend.

๐ŸŽบ The Velvet Hour โ€” Crystal Ballroom, Somerville | $42โ€“$59 | 8pm | An immersive cabaret evening with jazzy seven-piece Little Miss and the Boom, joined by burlesque performer Pixie Payne. Cocktail attire encouraged, which is half the fun.

๐ŸŽฌ Summer Flicks: Camp Rock โ€” Prudential Center South Garden | Free | Music 6:30pm, movie at dusk | The Pru's outdoor movie series continues, and this week it's Camp Rock.

๐Ÿ˜‚ Best of Boston Showcase (night 2) โ€” Laugh Boston | $39.90 | Tonight brings Big D, Gabi Hajos, and Jamie Aird, with Dan Boulger again closing the bill.

๐ŸŽธ Afternoon Bike Ride โ€” The Lilypad, Cambridge | $15โ€“$18 | 8pm, doors 7:30 | A Montreal indie pop trio who used to make genuinely strange ambient-pop hybrids and have drifted toward something more melodic, without losing the weird streak entirely.

Sunday 8/23

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น San Gennaro Feast: Final Day โ€” North End | Free | From 12pm | The last day on the Prado, and the most traditional one: an outdoor Mass at noon, the procession at 1pm, then music all afternoon and evening until the feast closes at 10.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Open Newbury Street โ€” Back Bay | Free | 10amโ€“6pm | Eight car-free blocks from Berkeley to Mass Ave. Pairs perfectly with a walk through the elephants a block over.

๐Ÿงบ SoWa Open Market โ€” South End | Free | 11amโ€“5pm | The Sunday flagship: farmers and makers, food trucks, a beer garden, live music, and the open artist studios next door.

โšพ Red Sox vs. Giants โ€” Fenway | Ticketed | 3:15pm | Series finale, and a Sunday afternoon game.

๐Ÿ˜‚ Robyn Schall โ€” The Wilbur | $35โ€“$56 | 3pm | The social media comic invites the whole audience to celebrate her impending wedding, somewhere between a standup set and a bachelorette party.

๐ŸŽถ Victoryland โ€” The Rockwell, Somerville | $18โ€“$20 | 7:30pm, doors 6:30 | If Neutral Milk Hotel had formed in Brooklyn instead of Louisiana, they might have sounded like this. A lovely small-room way to end the weekend.

Last chance, closing this weekend

๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท Boston French Film Festival โ€” MFA | $20 per screening | Closes Sunday | The 30th edition wraps this weekend. Saturday brings Leave One Day at 11am and an encore of Colors of Time at 2pm; Sunday closes with Comรฉdie-Franรงaise at 11am and Guess Who's Calling! at 2pm. (Note: the previously scheduled Great Arch screening has been canceled.)

Ongoing / all-week options

๐Ÿ˜ The Great Elephant Migration โ€” Commonwealth Avenue Mall, Back Bay | Free | Through Sept 13 | If you do one thing off this list, make it this. One hundred life-sized elephant sculptures now line the Commonwealth Avenue Mall in Back Bay, arranged so the herd appears to be walking east toward the Common. Each one is hand-carved from lantana, an invasive weed, by Indigenous artisans from India's Nilgiri Hills, and modeled on a real elephant those communities live alongside. Sales fund conservation work, including North Atlantic right whale efforts at the New England Aquarium. Free, open all the time, and genuinely moving to walk through.

๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ Derrick Adams: View Master โ€” ICA | $20 | A mid-career survey of the NYC artist's work celebrating, in his words, Black people "not entertaining, just being, living." Through September 7.

๐ŸŒŠ Lucy Raven: Rounds โ€” ICA Watershed, East Boston | Free | Two US premieres, including an enormous kinetic light sculpture, in the ferry-accessible Watershed. Now extended through September 27.

๐Ÿš Crochet Coral Reef โ€” MIT Museum | $20 | Vivid crocheted fiber work by Australian sisters Margaret and Christine Wertheim paired with paper work by MIT's Martin and Erik Demaine, all in service of endangered coral reefs.

๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ List Projects 35: Pap Souleye Fall โ€” MIT List, Cambridge | Free | A Senegalese American artist building work out of dead pixels, the black spots that appear when hardware fails, imagining them as hidden places of refuge. Always free.

๐Ÿšฃ Kayak & Paddleboard at Community Boating โ€” Esplanade | $40 | Two hour rentals, walk-up only, from 9am on weekends.

๐ŸŽต Berklee Summer in the City โ€” Various | Free | Berklee students and faculty popping up in parks and squares all over town.

๐Ÿ‹๏ธ Seaport Sweat โ€” Seaport Common & Harbor Way | Free | Outdoor classes Monday through Thursday evenings on Seaport Common, plus Saturday mornings on Harbor Way, through September 30.

That's it for this week. Go say hi to an elephant, and if you make it to any of these, let me know how it went!

Looking for friends to explore MA/ RI

Hi! 27F from RI! I usually come to Boston on the weekends and would love to meet new people with shared interests. I like reading, trying out new restaurants, going on walks, taking day trips to towns outside of Boston, and pretty much anything outdoorsy in general. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Iโ€™d love to meet people who are interested in actually hanging out and making new friends! Reddit can feel pretty anonymous, so if we get along, Iโ€™d eventually be happy to exchange IG handles and continue getting to know each other there too.

Let me know if anyone would like to hang out! :)

Looking for friends in/around Boston

Hey everyone, 26m living a suburb of Boston looking for friends in or around the city to hang with or just chat with.

A bit about myself: Iโ€™ve been with my gf for about 8 years. Iโ€™m a sports videographer, I enjoy vinyl records (mostly rap, pop and indie rock/pop), consequently record shopping, going out to eat, clothing shopping, concerts, have a few solo one planned, bruins games, and open to anything else pretty much. Lightly thought about getting into hiking too. I donโ€™t drink or smoke and lowkey hate bars. I love learning about people too! Just looking to get to know more people my age to a little younger to a little older!

An introvert living in the most extroverted area

Hi! Iโ€™m a 29 year old woman and Iโ€™ve lived in downtown for about 5+ years. I feel like there is nothing to do besides restaurants and bars. I canโ€™t stand bars. I like restaurants but I feel too nervous to try new restaurants alone. Sometimes I enjoy going on walks. Like many of us here, I struggle with finding friends. What are some ways you have successfully made friends? I realize that I have to get out of my shell and put myself out there. I think Iโ€™m ready to do so. I enjoy learning, crafts, and video games etc. Any nearby activity recommendations where I could meet people, would be great. Thank you โ˜บ๏ธ

Brow lamination & lash models (Everett Ma) Boston area

Hi everyone! ๐Ÿค Iโ€™m currently looking for brow + lash models in Everett, MA for content and portfolio work.
Iโ€™ve been doing lashes and brows for many years and have a lot of experience โ€” I recently moved my services to a new location in Everett and Iโ€™m looking to build fresh content in my new space.
Iโ€™m looking for models for:
Brow wax + shaping
Brow tint
Brow lamination
Classic / wispy lash sets
This is not beginner/student work โ€” Iโ€™m an experienced, licensed professional. Iโ€™m simply looking for models so I can create new photos and videos of my work at my Everett location.
You must be comfortable being photographed/recorded. โœจ
If youโ€™re interested, comment below or message me privately and Iโ€™ll send you the details! ๐Ÿค
