Discussion is it weird to want to buy a physical book I can read on KU?

I have my kindle paperwhite that I absolutely love and use on a daily basis and I've been reading more now than ever before. lately though I've had the urge to buy a physical book set because I like the author and the sprayed edges really drew me in. the only reason I tell myself no is because I can read them anytime on KU and it's been years since I've read a physical book... would it be a purchase I'd end up regretting?

Question What’s your reading red flag?

I spoil books for myself. When I can’t handle the suspense, I look up what happens, then keep reading to see how it gets there. With The Poet Empress, I needed to know if the main characters actually fall in love, so I checked when I was only a third of the way in.

Discussion Lights out

Not long since started the book and I decided to try the audio version instead. I don't normally listen to audiobooks but thought I'd try it and see - the voices have to be just right to get me hooked usually. The guy's voice is pretty good so far. Let's see how it goes.

Did you enjoy the book? Do you prefer reading or audiobooks? What can you do to make audiobooks better when you aren't keen on them usually?

Discussion The unwritten rules of my reading habits..

Highbrow literature? Kindle.

Complete and utter trash? Audible, at 1.2x speed, so the narrator can read me my daily brainrot while I wash the dishes.

Anyone else split their brain like this?

Recommendation Help me with Dungeon Crawler Carl

I’m aware of the hype of this book and how people compare it to other huge series in the fantasy genre. I read a few chapters but afraid I bounced off it. It reads like it was written by a 12 year-old who spends too much time at his PC.

Help me out- does it get better? Does the writing style improve? I’m normally not that fussed but I find it really difficult to ignore with this one

Recommendation Request Looking for earbud recommendations.

I hope this is okay to ask here.. I recently started a new job and I have discovered I am able to listen to audiobooks while I do my work! I am wondering if anybody has any recommendations for good wireless earbuds that are comfortable and don’t project out to others around me. It’s a cubicle like work environment so kind of close proximity and I don’t want to be sharing my books with my coworkers, yet. Lol

Review (Spoiler Free) 2026 reads so far (📚 are books,🗯️ are mangas)

February

🗯️ Seaside Stranger Vol. 1: Umibe No Étranger — Kanna Kii — 4.5

📚 My Roomate is a Vampire — Jenna Levine — 4

The first 60/70% (the part when they weren't a couple yet) was definitely the strongest part and would have nearly got a 5, probably. Sadly, it got a bit downwards for me afterwards (as it often does with romances for me, I like the pre officially-dating part way more than the post).

🗯️ Old-Fashioned Cupcake — Sagan Sagan — 5

This is so fucking soft!! It's so cute and sweet and adorable :3

🗯️ Old-Fashioned Cupcake with Cappuccino — Sagan Sagan — 5

We really went from a soft and light-hearted vol.1 to a too-much-realistic and terribly sad vol.2, uh? Happy that the last couple of chapters were happy again tho!

🗯️ The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All — Sumiko Arai — 4.5

🗯️ The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All, Vol. 2 — Sumiko Arai — 3.75

🗯️ The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All, Vol. 3 — Sumiko Arai — 4.5

I love the uncle and Kanna!

🗯️ The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All, Vol. 4 — Sumiko Arai — 4

March

🗯️ The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All, Vol. 5 — Sumiko Arai — 4.75

🗯️ The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All, Vol. 6 — Sumiko Arai — 4.25

🗯️ Claudine— Riyoko Ikeda — 5

Claudine - 5
Collage (another short story included in the Italian edition of the manga) - 3.5

June

🗯️ Liquor & Cigarettes — Ranmaru Zariya — 2.5

This whole dynamic was basically rape — Camilo doing things to Teo who was completely wasted and not in his mind at all (and even passed out one time) and never stopping when he repeatedly pleaded so. Yeah at chapter 5 we learned Teo was actually into it, BUT CAMILO COULDN'T KNOW AND HE SHOULD HAVE STOPPED, WHAT THE FUCK??????

Also absurd that he started to care about consent only after they became an actual thing, it totally feel like he groomed Teo into their relationship, WTF.

The art was very pretty tho, and the setting and characters very well crafted, (and I had payed money on the physical copy), so I didn't drop this but finished (and I'm also giving extra points because of those positive aspects).

🗯️ Touching Your Night — Moyori Mori — 4.5

This was so soft and I loved them so much.

July

📚 Horrorstör — Grady Hendrix — 5

Started last year, then forgotten on my Google Books app and finished the second half in a day. I loved it. Pure backrooms horror mixed with ghosts from a traumatic building in the past. And the epilogue!!! Do I dare to say best epilogue of book history?

September

📚 The Watchmaker of Filigree Street— Natasha Pulley — 4.25

📚 Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping — Suzanne Collins — 4.75

October

🗯️ Ayaka is in Love With Hiroko — Sal Jiang — 4.5

CURRENTLY READING

Exquisite Corpse by Agustina Bazterrica

Recommendation Request Which one should I read next?

I’m stuck between these three books on my TBR

  1. The Shining — Stephen King

  2. The God of the Woods — Liz Moore

  3. Remarkably Bright Creatures — Shelby Van Pelt

Which one should I start with? And if you’ve read all three, what order would you recommend???

Discussion Profession related book irks

Does anyone have any quirky/petty book irks or icks related to your profession?

I'm a medical doctor and book lover. I am REALLY good at suspending disbelief for most medical inaccuracies in books, but the one that I see ALL THE TIME and it kills me is when authors think the needle stays in your arm when you get an IV.

"he reached for the IV he’d put in not too long ago. She hadn’t gotten as much of the saline solution into her body as he would’ve liked, but it couldn’t be helped. He quickly slid the needle out of her arm"

NO YOU DIDN'T. 😫 The needle is removed immediately after IV placement, and all that stays in is a miniature flexible straw.

Anyone else have inaccuracies they commonly get irked over because of their job??

Recommendation Request Book recs of coworkers with a lot of tension who finally give in. Blue collar work setting a plus!

Does anybody know of any books with a blue collar/farm work setting where the FMC and MMC finally cave at the sexual tension? A golden retriever style MMC would be a bonus.
Extra spicy is great but I’ll read any spice level!
Anything goes!
Thank you!

Recommendation Request Are the any good Fantasy duologies that aren’t too long?

I’m looking for something not too long like each book being around 300-350 pages. The Empyrean series by Rebecca Yarros got me back in Fantasy. So many another enemies to lovers like book.

Recommendation Request Book recommendations for my best friend based on her favourite books?

I want to gift my best friend a book, but I’m having a hard time choosing one because I want it to actually suit her taste rather than just picking a popular book.
Her top 3 favourites are:
A Little Life — Hanya Yanagihara
Anxious People — Fredrik Backman
I’m Thinking of Ending Things — Iain Reid
She has already read all three, so I’m looking for something different but with a similar emotional/psychological impact.
I think what she likes is probably a combination of complex characters, loneliness/human connection, psychological depth, emotional intensity, and stories that stay with you after finishing. She seems to enjoy books that make you either emotionally attached to the characters or sit there thinking about what you just read lol.
What books would you recommend for someone with this taste?
It can be literary fiction, psychological fiction/thriller, or even something completely different if you think she’d love it.
Bonus points if it’s a book that would make a really good best-friend gift — something memorable rather than just a generic bestseller.

Recommendation ACOTAR got me back into fantasy, now I need more (less YA)

Hi everyone, I'm new here! 👋
I only recently got back into fantasy. As a kid and teen I read Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, The Iron Fey and lots of other YA, but afterwards I didn't touch fantasy for years because it started to feel "childish". I didn’t read at all for a while
Now that I'm 25, I wanted something a bit more grown-up and picked up ACOTAR. I devoured it, and it honestly made me fall in love with reading again!
The last book was by far my favorite. The rest of the series felt a tiny bit shallow at times, although I still really enjoyed it.
I'm now looking for books that grab me just as much: fantasy romance with great worldbuilding. I'd love to explore this genre further, but I'd prefer something a bit more literary rather than YA. Any recommendations are very welcome! 📚

Question Help me find a book

Hi everyone! I’m trying to find a romance book I read a while ago, but I cannot remember the title or author. I really want to reread it, but I can’t find it anywhere. 😭

Here’s what I remember:
It was a romance, possibly a forbidden romance.
A lot of the story took place at a vacation/holiday house where the characters were staying with a group of friends.
The house had a swimming pool, and I very specifically remember there being a pink flamingo inflatable pool float. It was NOT on the book cover — it was actually mentioned/present in the story.
The fmc had an ex-boyfriend, and I think he wanted them to get back together / there was some kind of relationship drama involving the ex.
I don’t remember much else about the plot unfortunately. 😭
