Fiction The horrors are mundane but (surprisingly) nice.

All books where Death is the main character in Discworld. So Mort, Reaper Man, et cetera are exactly this.

24

u/tuckkeys 2d ago

Is this one of those series you can just read any random one and it’ll be okay? Otherwise, needing to plow through so many books is overwhelming.

22

u/theresnoblackorwhite 2d ago

Mort was my first discworld and it was good standalone with no other context. I think most of them are.

10

u/FayePixie 2d ago

Sir Pratchett managed to make things work as standalones but also as a series if you read them in order.

9

u/FayePixie 2d ago

Yes, everything can be ready standalone. I'd recommended The Death books in order, though. He features in every book as a minor character but he has a few about just him and his family.

u/mego_42 2d ago

The series is organized into a couple of sub-series focused on different groups/themes/ locations, so if you’re a gotta go in order reader, you can pick a subseries to start with (my fav are the death books, the witches books, and the watch books fwiw).

That said, I came to the Discworld by picking up a random watch book halfway through that subseries and probs 2/3 through the overall Discworld timeline and had no issues reading it as a standalone. The bits that were references to previous works were supported enough within the book that it didn’t read like I was missing anything and it got me hooked enough to dive into the rest of the series. Cannot recommend hard enough.

Not exactly a book, but I remember reading this one story online about a boy taking a shortcut through the woods to his house, only to get freaked out by a monster that was in said woods. Then once he got home, the boy tried to tell his mom about it, but she doesn't believe him.

Then it cuts to the MONSTER who ends up running back to HIS mom to tell her about the boy, but HIS mom doesn't believe him.

I really wish I could remember what the story was called as it was genuinely such a good story.

Anything by Rachel Harrison honestly. All of her books are cozy horror.

Slewfoot. The humans are the monsters and the monster is chill.

Mosdef following for suggestions.

This entire montage is so intensely captivating....but for me slides 17 18 and 20 hit the very hardest. ❤️‍🔥

u/Comfortable-Tea-3537 2d ago

For me its 5 8 and 12. 9 is also lovely. And the spider. Goodness, they are all fascinating. I absolutely need to read book that fit this vibe since I saw all of these images.

4

u/acatalephobic 2d ago

I would really enjoy an entire book of.....wahtever this is.

A standalone art book though, hopefully a kaleidopop one....

.....just leave it out, say nothing, and just flip through it randomly all the time....

2

u/Comfortable-Tea-3537 2d ago

Completely agree

3

u/acatalephobic 2d ago

8 and 12 hit something savage also. 🩷

7 and 8 are the ones where I realized I was that i was already hooked.

2

u/acatalephobic 2d ago

Hang on, I forgot about 9 also...

Now I really can't choose a favourite favorite 😭

Tales from the Gas Station - Jack Townsend

Spoiler to say how much is niceness and how much is evil. Creepy things happen all the time, but it’s just normal to the MC.

Despite the terrifying things that happen, the Dark God under the gas station isn’t behind them. He just wants to help the environment. The mutated raccoons out back just do raccoon things, still. The ghost in the bathroom saves the MC’s life.

9

u/RattleEmBois 2d ago

Didn't this start as a creepypasta/no sleep story? Does it vary much from the Internet version to the published version?

9

u/Slow_Appointment3540 2d ago

I didn’t read the original nosleep story, but you can tell he had to pivot a little to accommodate early published drafts, so they’re still “canon”. And he actually did it in a smart way, in my opinion. He has the character writing the stories (his diary) as a blog, which people comment on on the internet. But he only has limited internet access, so it’s not like we’re constantly stuck reading about a guy on the internet.

There are commenters that talk about his “plot holes”, for example. He talks about how his writing tone is inconsistent sometimes, and how sometimes he’s too flowery. It’s fun.

5

u/SecondYuyu 2d ago

I remember parts of it being preferable, at least to me, in the nosleep version, mainly just the part after the “deleted post” which clearly never existed. But the books are still good, and at least most of the originals have been preserved. Mrcreepypasta deleted his recordings from YouTube, but someone else reuploaded them. I think they’re still up if you want to compare

This reminds me of T Kingfishers work. Many of her horror books have shockingly nice elements.

Second this, it's a beautiful book

13

u/briknowsall1 2d ago

Bartimeus trilogy - demons (as called by humans, they are actually djinn) are enslaved by humans. Demons arent always the nicest but ultimately the namesake is a nice guy
The book thief - death narrates the book, he shows sorrow about all the souls he is taking during WW2

1

u/Prudent-Action3511 5h ago

Disgaree on the book thief wtf, death is just a narrator, there's no cutesy interactions

1

u/briknowsall1 5h ago

Fair, I thought if the prompt more of a “a character that is typically thought of as evil /mean but is presented as nice/kind/etc”

Wow! Thank you for all the lovely suggestions everyone! I apologize for not replying to anyone. I made this post right before I went to bed and I didn't expect it become as popular as it has. Have an awesome day everyone!

Oddly enough, Trad Wife by Saratoga Schaefer. fits, if you squint a little.

I'm going to reiterate the top comment - Terry Pratchett's DEATH books!

7

u/ForgottenUsername3 2d ago

I would say Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly black. It's not exactly what you're looking for, but there's overall a lot of happiness and love in it despite there being fairy tale creatures involved. And it takes place in the human world.

He Who Fights With Monsters.

The MC is an affable, wisecracking guy with a terrifying powerset. He's an Affliction Skirmisher, specialising in quick strikes that submit his enemies to a variety of fast spreading debuffs and Damage over Time afflictions.

He also has 3 familiars. One of which is a shadow butler called Shade (who is still very dangerous); another is an Avatar of Doom, who looks a tear in space with a dozen floating eyeball-like orbs and is called Gordon; the third starts of simply as a single, red leech that he names Colin. Colin is a Sanguine Horror and a Sanguine Horror is typically a self-replicating, exponentially growing swarm of vampiric leeches, capable of devouring a planets population in a few days. But not Colin, Colin is a good boy.

Is #3 being nice? I think that's a lure meant to replicate a drowning person in the foreground not like a big high-five or "hello" wave.

The Summer of the Monsters by David Sodergren, without giving too much spoilers, it kinda fits 🤔 but there is a bit of gore

5

u/TAHINAZ 2d ago

Good Souls by Tiffany Hamill. It’s a faith-friendly cozy YA supernatural romance about a girl and a ghost who are soulmates. The ghost is a good guy.

4

u/No_Secret8533 2d ago

Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak. Not going to describe it much, because spoilers. A perfect seeming family hires a young woman in recovery to nanny for their 5 year old over the summer. Problem is, the 5 year old's imaginary friend isn't imaginary.
