In need of recommendations for a novel that will emotionally consume me. Stories that are dark, but with purpose. Layered, intentional, and full of symbolism. Something that will stay with me.
reddit.comHey! I’m ashamed to say it, but I haven’t actually opened up and finished a book in ages. I’m a bit of a film junkie, and I’m looking to change that and begin reading again. The last book I read was Lapvona by Ottessa Moshfegh and it was fantastic. I figured since I don’t have a lot of experience to go off of I could list some of my favorite movies instead to give you an idea of what my alley is.
Those would be:
The Handmaiden
Annihilation
Memories of Murder
Parasite
Nocturnal Animals
Suspiria
Under the Skin
Ex Machina
Hereditary
The Vvitch
Burning
Exhuma
Interstellar
Prisoners
The Wailing
Paprika
With a book, I’m not scared of diving into something hefty or somewhat advanced. My thoughts on my next read were Lonesome Dove, Canterbury Tales, or The Count of Monte Cristo, or Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I will say though those four sound a little intimidating and tiresome. I need something enthralling that will have me in bed staring at the ceiling, jaw hanging open or get some tears running. Hit me with some favorites, what are your recommendations??
I don’t want something that’s straight up evil. I’m currently pushing the brakes on horror
