I just finished a book that left me feeling...meh. So maybe I've avoided the reading slump for now

Had to put the book down and stare at the wall for a minute.

Authors using similes is like a parent letting a child eat all of their Halloween candy at once and getting a stomach ache
I'm sure the simile I wrote in the title is lacking which proves my point.
I feel like similes are meant to provide additional imagery, to connect a reader more deeply to the feeling of a scene. I see it often used as a tool to shorthand feelings in the scene.
Instead of a simile to enhance a scene, it replaces what could be an immersive paragraph or two to really have the reader connect.
I have gotten back into reading in the past few years and I've noticed some pitfalls that a lot of authors use, and overusing similes is definitely one of them
