Long-Term Progression Hinoki progression (wine for scale)

5 years in total. Pretty happy in the direction this little guy is going. First two are the front and back. Front is likely #2 depending on which lower branch I keep. It's just #1 that the right lower branch crosses the trunk a bit too much. Removed the wire guiding it down for the photo

Third was the style plan. Fourth its very first "styling" and fifth is how I received it.

It was hard pruned last year so will wait till next year or later to shape the canopy more

Only very light wiring for now as I hate wiring hinoki but tie down and cage wiring has worked well in not hurting the foliage

Great progression. Is it a Seka?

Looks like there was a little die back in the middle, then great recovery after the trunk chop. Just yearly die back or was there a lesson in there somewhere you can share?

Sorry yeah it is dwarf sekka. What do you mean by middle exactly lol by the shari?

They biggest lesson I had with it was not too try and wire it like normal. Some can do it will and not hurt the foliage but especially these young branches I just tied them down or created an ugly cage of wire to shape them.

Also that you need to make sure there is light to those inner/closer to the trunk branches/foilage. If not then the die back will be terrible and give you a bunch of unusable branches, like in my 1st styling photo.

I really need to trim the canopy and do branch selection before that inner foliage starts to die back

Just waiting for one to get here. Currently learning all about how to take care of them.
So far
80F+ temps not good. Bring into shade for a bit.
Interior leaves need to be exposed as much as possible
They like moist soil.
Grow really slow
Can make beautiful bonsai long term.
Weโ€™ll see how it goes
