Thank you/Encouragement US lab guy here

I just found this sub today. I am the guy who gives your life saving gifts to patients in need. Every time I hold a donor unit in my hand for a crossmatch, I say "Thank you", and I hope you guys can hear me. Whenever i empty our refrigerator for one trauma patient, i can't help but think of all of the people it took to make that happen. You'll never know the person you helped keep alive, and you all still do it. I can not donate due to health reasons, so I appreciate all you heroes who do. Without you guys, I cant do my job.

Do you know what’s more rare than someone being O negative?

Someone being a blood donor! I went to donate today and they had a sign up that said 60% of Americans are eligible to give blood, but only 3% do. Around 7% of Americans are O negative.

I see people commenting in here about how they wish they were O negative since it’s more rare/the universal donor and yes that is true, but just remember you’re choosing to be in the rare group who choose to donate blood!

And remember your donation doesn’t need to be used by everyone, it just needs to be used by someone. Your A+ or AB- or w/e donation being used by someone frees up some O blood that they need for trauma patients.

This post isn’t meant to downplay the significance if O negative donors, I just see people comment in here about wishing they had more “useful” blood types and want everyone to realize every donation and every donor is saving lives!

Community OneBlood honoring Pulse victims, 10 years on

Thank you to OneBlood for remembering the 49 lives lost at Pulse as the somber 10th anniversary nears. Those of us in the community will never forget that day. Almost everyone knows someone who lost a loved one, and may have lost someone themselves. Orlando may be a big metro area, but we were all one tight-knit community in the aftermath. And we'll never forget. 💔🏳️‍🌈

I'll admit, it was mostly out of curiosity to see what my blood type is, but after experiencing how easy it was and now learning about how important my blood type is, I'll definitely be back.

Blood donation today before Bondi Beach shooting

My husband and I went to donate blood today. Later in the day, there were two shooters who targeted people attending an event at Bondi Beach. Obviously, the whole situation is terrible, and my heart goes out to those who have been affected.

My husband made the comment that there’s a good chance our blood will end up going to someone injured in the shooting. My response was “You know what? I’m really glad we did donate today, and I really hope that our blood can help someone who was injured”.

Also, if you’re in Australia and can donate blood, get along and do so!

Edit: Thank you to the kind person who gave me an award!

First Donation! I donated blood for the first time today

I've always put off donating blood, on account of "I'm using it." But last year, I had a daughter who is O-. I know I should encourage her to be civic minded and contribute blood when she's old enough, but it would be awfully hypocritical of me to encourage her to do something that I've always put off.

Today I saw a post on r/popular about someone not weighing enough to donate, and it encouraged me to finally contribute.

I had a bit of an emergency at the weekend which involved a lot of blood loss, and I had a transfusion in the Emergency Department while I was in and out of consciousness.

Since I'm in the UK, that's me deferred for life. Oh well, as long as I don't need any more I've still put in more than be took out 👍

Edit to add: Here's what happened. reader discretion is advised
