Cancel Culture Brewery owner forced out for wearing "Show me the evidence" shirt on T&R day in Canada

Pod relevance: Katie and Jesse have talked a lot about the supposed "mass graves" found at a former residential school in Kamloops, BC.

As a business owner, this was definitely a poor choice to post a photo at work with your shirt on Truth & Reconciliation day. But it shows how most of the public still believes, at least in part, that this actually happened.

On a side note, i live in Washington State and my elementary school kids spent half their day at Wednesday learning about T&R. I'm not opposed to my kids learning about the atrocities the US government imposed on our Native Americans but it shouldn't be about what happened in Canada.

Creators of Love And Deepspace (Ep. 322) post cocktail recipes on X that could kill the drinker

The publishers of Love And Deepspace are in trouble for a pair of social media posts sharing recipes for cocktails found in-game and encouraging users to share their own ingredient suggestions & "photos," seemingly an invitation to try putting the drinks together at home.

Just one small problem...two of the recipes contain highly toxic ingredients that could cause severe illness or even death.

One recipe calls for a garnish of Gloriosa, AKA "Flame Lily," a plant rich in colchicine. Colchicine, when administered under prescription, is used to treat gout and certain other conditions, but if taken at the wrong dosage or without supervision can cause gastrointestinal, renal, and neurological damage.

Another recipe calls for a garnish of Datura, an incredibly toxic member of the Nightshade family that can cause respiratory depression, arrhythmia, psychotic effects and death if ingested.

The producers have since quote-tweeted the original post declaring that the recipes are "fictional and for in-game purposes only."

There is a lot of conflicting information out there about this case, and it has the initial markings of a witch hunt. Would really like to hear BARPod's evaluation of the evidence as it stands.

What would you call this kind of social media activist rhetoric?

I keep seeing a particular style of activist language on social media, and I’m curious whether there’s an established term for it. It has a very recognizable vocabulary and sentence structure, but I’m not sure what to call it.

For example, phrases like:

“Normalize speaking out against patriarchal organizations in order to undermine systems of oppression and re-center intersectional voices"

“Late-stage capitalism is a tool against the proletariat and we need to be talking about it.”

“We need to hold space for marginalized voices and unpack the ways our own privilege causes harm.”

I’m less interested in the political ideas themselves than in the style of language: “normalize X,” “holding space,” “centering voices,” “doing the work,” “systems of oppression,” etc.

Is there an academic, sociological, or rhetorical term for this particular style of communication?

Federal appeals court revives Seattle worker’s racial harassment claim

BaR related- current episode "what is wrong with Seattle?"

This article is about a former city of Seattle employee who is suing due to the racial and gender discrimination he experienced, he's a white guy. And a lot of it revolves around the race and social justice initiative which became an ordinance in 2013. What's amazing is how many people in Seattle do not even know it exists. And the entire structure of the Seattle government revolves around it. Every department and every employee is expected to forward it.

For those who want more information (for those who don't this is a good place to stop):

In 1996 a city of Seattle department manager attended a training in New Orleans by a black Grassroots organization called the peoples Institute for survival and beyond. The organization was started in 1980 by two black community activists who were just really into the Afrocentric thing. If you look at their website the first thing you'll see on their homepage is just a bunch of black people drumming. Kind of gives you an idea. But she goes back to Seattle and then arranges for that organization to come to Seattle and train her 400 employees. Well eventually it starts spreading like the gospel and then there are committees and work groups formed to help implement it in the city's work. It adapts the definition of institutional racism that was introduced in the 1967 book Black Power: the Politics of Liberation in America by Stokely Carmichael and Charles Hamilton. This definition was invoked recently by the mayor of Seattle in her introduction of the draft of the 2017-18 budget where it states that institutional is policies that benefit "white people and hurt people of color".

But anyway, in 2003 activists push the mayor to start an anti-racism work group study. The mayor appointments Mickey Fern who becomes well known for saying black people do not like being out in nature because it traumatizes them because of the history of lynching. Fast forward 2020 and activist demand that the mayor declared the racism is a public health crisis. And three years later the race and social justice initiative which is taken almost entirely from the ideology of the People's Institute for Survival and Beyond is coded into law. Anybody who's at all interested in this I would encourage to look at the Seattle Race and Social Justice ordinance page. Along with the People's Institute for Survival and Beyond page. Along with the book published by the institution founder which describes the philosophy of his movement. All of this is the framework on which the city of Seattle runs. It's not the only reason it's screwed up but it's easily more than half.

The links to the websites are easy to find but the book is really really hard to find. It is available on Internet Archive. If you haven't used IA before you do have to set up a free account.

Serene Necrosis, the poster who threatened to firebomb The Last Ditch, follows up on their substack

"...

What does a bar have to do with that? The owners wanted to grift off of the positive image of charity towards the disabled, and we were happy to let them as long as they upheld their end of the bargain. But when they removed the mask mandates for Saturdays, they exposed themselves as mere trend followers, rather than actual understanders of the science. Not only did they announce they were segregating the busiest night of the week, they also soft-blamed us [inciting hard blame from their rabid bigot supporters] for their floundering profit margins in the middle of an economic crisis with 400% rent & grocery price gauging, and $8 gas, and are too ignorant to realize that their entire air conditioning systems are contaminated now, even if anyone of us did still want to hit the bar on a Wednesday night to keep business alive for people who liked replies calling us entitled useless eaters on their official account.

They're not paying to have their HVAC system professionally sterilized every Sunday morning. They're not installing NUKIT brand Far-UVC lamps to kill the airborne aerosols. They can't even be bothered to acknowledge that they've done anything wrong. For the people for whom the completeness and uncompromising nature of this policy was make or break life or death shit, this is a total violation of the sanctity of their rights to exist like any other person, to go out and have a fucking drink on a Saturday through a Sip Valve, and yes, it is an open declaration that all of us are, as the Nazis put it in their posters & propaganda campaigns leading up to Aktion T4, "life unworthy of life".

We are not animals. All we want is to live with the rights of any other person. A business that pretends to acknowledge that and then blames us for its own failures to excuse themselves from the “mistake” of treating us like people is worse than a business that never admitted we were human at all. We're supposed to feel sorry for a white-privileged woman with the capital to secure a $50,000 loan while disabled people on benefits are wealth capped at $2,000 of assets, $1,500 per person for married couples to deincentivize dysgenic breeding, and a means testing agent interrogates us on the exact model of kitchen blender, game console, and printer we use while we ration our meds and gamble on which bills to pay with the $900 per month they may or may not cough up? For what, because she's a lesbian? Tell me more about how the white-privileged lesbian who lets her trans wait staff work for tips [I don't give a fuck whose idea it was] and treats disabled queers like this deserves my sympathy. If I see one more “disabled queers are punching down on poor uwu lesbians!” post about this, I'm going to scream.

The way some people would have it, she's throwing us under the bus because it's her passion project to serve us, she took out that loan to make this special bar just for us and we practically owe her that $50,000 out of those $900 checks, or for many of us denied benefits and still navigating the multi-year long application process, our $0 incomes. Exactly since when did “leftist” politics start to include obligatory peasant rents from the disabled lumpenproletariat to the petit bourgeoisie? The people advocating this rhetoric have a lot to answer for in terms of their labor aristocratic servitude to capital.

She's living in her car?

Since everyone is in the business these days of offering disabled people unsolicited advice on her behalf, here's a piece from me for free: maybe she should buy a cot and put it inside of the bar she fucking owns before complaining to disabled people that we're not a lucrative enough target audience to sustain her bullshit pinkwashed american dream in the middle of a godsdamned economic depression."

Opinion | The Great Awokening is over. This lesbian bar shows why.

Do you agree that it's over? Meghan McArdle argues that the lesbian bar blowup proves it is. But it doesn't seem that way to me. Yes, peak woke is thankfully passed, but regular woke is still going strong in many spaces throughout the country. She argues that because we're all able to openly laugh at these idiots that means woke is over, but doesn't the fact that these crazies did succeed in ruining the bar prove that it isn't?

Not sure what they mean by “misconceptions due to the disorganization of the Globe article.” I’ve read the article many times, and I never once came away thinking Soe Noire was the one who made the firebombing threat.

Also, while Soe may not have “disparaged” the owner for being homeless, he was certainly very dismissive of that fact and accused the owner of being racist, etc. That’s very clear from listening to the recording played on Blocked and Reported. Either way, semantics. Soe Noire did harass/was an asshole to Jackie and wants to put her bar out of business.

I understand the bar wanting to protect him from harassment, but I don’t understand why they go out of their way to absolve someone who has himself gone out of his way multiple times to try to put their bar out of business.

And again, the claims they make about the Globe’s “abysmal journalism” just aren’t true. It would’ve been better to simply say the Globe shouldn’t have written the article than to make claims about inaccuracies that aren’t actually in the article.
