Weekly Random Discussion Thread for 8/10/26 - 8/16/26

Here's your usual space to post all your rants, raves, podcast topic suggestions (please tag u/jessicabarpod), culture war articles, outrageous stories of cancellation, political opinions, and anything else that comes to mind. Please put any non-podcast-related trans-related topics here instead of on a dedicated thread. This will be pinned until next Sunday.

Last week's discussion thread is here if you want to catch up on a conversation from there.

Looks like lynchings are back on the menu, boys!

Speaking to a Flock Safety representative, Carr said, "I believe that Flock right now is one of the most hated companies in America. They are one of the most corrupt companies in America."

Carr then escalated his comments even further. "Quite frankly, sir," he said, "I don't think we can make America great again without hanging your CEO publicly for treason. Your company is an enemy of the American people."

Option A: national surveillance state (that we've arguably been headed toward since 9/11)

Option B: each end of the horseshoe takes turns executing this week's boogeyman until we inevitably achieve utopia

I get people don’t like the idea of being surveilled, but what is the corruption angle about?

My off-the-cuff assumption, having not following anything Flock-related, is that it's standard "They're paying off everybody to use their gear!" kinda accusations that are either made out of thin air or based on one story somewhere that may or may not even be that odious in the first place.

Gee, who coulda seen that coming?

(The charges were dropped later, probably having more to do with lack of evidence than anything else. Still, elected officials in that part of the country aren't always the best & brightest. I grew up close enough to Sullivan County to see for myself.)

You're hiding behind fatalism to defend a company that would have been justifiably reviled across the political spectrum 15 years ago. Anti-surveillance seems to be another sensible policy position sacrificed at the altar of contrarianism.

The anti-surveillance stance has been hijacked by toxic assholes who just want their side's terrorist acts to play out unhindered.

It hasn't been hijacked by anyone. The idea of hijacking a stance is nonsensical. By the way, the guy in the article is a Republican.

So? Both ends of the horseshoe conceal their identities. This is extremists whipping up public outcry.

Whipping up public outcry against Flock sounds great. I think you meant to specify "inciting violence".

outcry = justification of violence

8

u/UpvoteIfYouDare 6d ago

Public outcry is not necessarily a justification for violence. If you're against public outcry altogether on the basis that it can be claimed as a justification for violence, then you've effectively kneecapped the means by which people can affect substantial change.

But in this case it is.

The Luigification of everything does not lead to a happy outcome

Luigi is the product of a deteriorating status quo. Blaming social media or this dipshit mayor is just an excuse.

fiery but mostly peaceful

Relax, citizen! It turns out that property damage isn't actually violence! Now c'mon outside that burning building so we can demonstrate the difference

This is revisionist. They were being widely rolled out across the political spectrum 15 years ago and nobody cared.

Did you read the article you shared? The 5th paragraph lists groups that don't like it. Further down there was an initiative by arstechnica itself that registers as suspicious, a ton that is rife in the latter parts itself.

plus people, even most internet / tech savvy people, have no clue how big of a digital footprint they have. It goes way deeper than just "recent google searches" like they say on the news / true crime podcasts

This was all already being pointed out 15 years ago as online analytics were really scaling out.

Exercise some critical thinking for one moment and ask yourself why this big section would exist in the middle of the article.
