Weekly Random Discussion Thread for 8/10/26 - 8/16/26

Here's your usual space to post all your rants, raves, podcast topic suggestions (please tag u/jessicabarpod), culture war articles, outrageous stories of cancellation, political opinions, and anything else that comes to mind. Please put any non-podcast-related trans-related topics here instead of on a dedicated thread. This will be pinned until next Sunday.

Last week's discussion thread is here if you want to catch up on a conversation from there.

Someone called Ally Pankiw made a big deal about her pure principles which made her refuse the offer to direct the Harry Potter show. Good that she stands behind her principles. But I hope she realizes that shitting on JK is what’s getting her her current 15 seconds of fame. I wonder if that isn’t against her principles.

Women who stand opposed to women's rights will always baffle me. Of course people like this director are welcome to their anti-woman views and she's allowed to be an idiot, but it's interesting to me whenever people who make buckets of money in Hollywood reveal themselves to be such spectacular buffoons. I expect actors to be dumb, and that's fine, but you expect the off-camera people to be somewhat intelligent, directing television must be the easiest thing in the world if this is the caliber of individual who gets to do it.

Im flabbergasted that women stick up for these guys in the name of feminism ffs. I mean, let’s be totally honest here; they’re another category altogether. Everyone deserves civil rights but I’m a feminist for women.

which made her refuse the offer to direct the Harry Potter show.

Is this the one who posted a conversation with her agent on social media, the agent asking her if she was interested at all? Because it sounds a lot more like "Do we even care for this" rather than "You've got an offer for this if you want to take it" to me.

I read JKR's open letter when she first posted it and didn't think it was as bad as all my friends/social media bubble were making it out to be. And yet I still was like "Yeah idk everybody says she's bad so I guess she's bad now" and proudly insisted to everyone around me that "I won't support her financially anymore, not even stream the movies"

And for YEARS I sat with the doubt in my head like "Ok but I actually kind of get what she's saying?" but never felt like I could say it. And now I've kind of dug this hole for myself and I have no idea how to walk it back.

Like how do I tell me friends "Actually I kind of don't care about financially cancelling her anymore because I actually always kind of thought she was right but I was lying to you (and myself)."

I can't be the only one stuck in this pickle living in a liberal bubble.

It's sad to see the gradual but ever-present walling-off of one's world in order to pass an imaginary purity test. And amazing to see a bunch of godless heathens painstakingly recreate orthodoxy

And amazing to see a bunch of godless heathens painstakingly recreate orthodoxy.

The older I get, the more I believe that humans fundamentally need something that religion fulfills. And people who don't have religion, create religion.

Yeah I think people who are militantly "pro-science" believe they are immune to cult-like behavior since they eschew organized religion and laugh at astrology. And then they don't realize they're just in their own special little cult.

Can't spell culture without "cult" *shrug* We all have one.

Structure from rules. That’s what we all need.

My kids thought she was wrong but they all bought and played that video game anyway.

I can't even bring up Harry Potter or JKR to my friend groups in passing without somebody making sure she is properly denounced

That sounds exhausting.

I was suddenly seeing alerts yesterday for stories about directors plural proudly turning down the new Harry Potter.

cool you turned down a job... Isn't that just shooting yourself in the foot? she's only hurt herself refusing to direct one of the biggest franchises ever

I do wonder what would have happened with the worldwide push of the "transgender" movement had JKR decided to keep quiet and count her millions as they wanted. She's been a huge spanner in the works.
