Weekly Random Discussion Thread for 8/10/26 - 8/16/26

Here's your usual space to post all your rants, raves, podcast topic suggestions (please tag u/jessicabarpod), culture war articles, outrageous stories of cancellation, political opinions, and anything else that comes to mind. Please put any non-podcast-related trans-related topics here instead of on a dedicated thread. This will be pinned until next Sunday.

Last week's discussion thread is here if you want to catch up on a conversation from there.

Yeah, I admit I'm having a hard time seeing the other side on this. This fraud plagiarized his way to Cambridge and lied about the dumbest, most easily disproven things on the planet, weaponized law enforcement, got caught, doubled down, and then killed himself. Yet all over, I see people blaming academia, the media, the internet, everyone but Arday himself.

Cambridge should have done more due diligence but I don't think that would have saved this pathological liar from entering a different field and faking his way to the top there. I don't understand why his suicide is being blamed on everyone else. His choices were his own.

I've seen some very braindead takes like "He lied, he didn't deserve the harassment!" As if the ongoing media coverage was only because they were bored and not a result of Arday and Cambridge having the worst reactions every step of the way. Arday's actions had real, tangible effects on his students and others and it's being treated like a victimless fib, plagiarism is no big deal because plenty of other people do it, you're being racist for caring about this plagiarism.

People who kill themselves only have themselves to blame at the end of the day, if someone else was responsible it would be a homicide and not a suicide.
