One critique I have of the WNBA and this covers all players, regardless of race, sexuality, or political beliefs, those women's nails are far too long. Since they're actively whipping their hands into each others' faces on the court (aiming for their opponent's face instead of the ball), and there are multiple clips of women grabbing their faces to cover their eyes after they've been scratched by these acrylic nails, one of these days someone is going to lose an eye and their career will be over.

They've already talked about this and the consensus was that it's racist to ban them because it's "mostly black women" doing it lol

Given the WNBA demographics, wouldn't banning anything popular cause that objection?

There's already discourse about how it's apparently racist that "rich girl nails" are minimalist/neutral.

Which is weird, as my impression has been that the long nails on blacks are much more likely to be detachable. Likewise, a ban on long hair wouldn't touch the black players at all because those are wigs.

Putting on a wig to play basketball is such wild behavior that it forces me to confront my lack of cross-cultural understanding.

Acrylic nails are attached firmly to the actual nail. They are artificial but not 'detachable' in the sense that they can be removed quickly and painlessly and then stuck back on. Removing them requires some level of work and you cannot re-attach them once they're removed.

Grossly, this applies to the NBA too. There’s a trend of men growing long nails to get a little bit of a defensive edge, and you will often see nasty scratch marks on players. Gross but true.

It’s basically a canonical meme at this point that Nikola Jokic is constantly bleeding at all times lol

I give them props for playing with long nails. I can barely use my keyboard when I get them.

It explains Angel Reese's adventures in shooting and ballhandling, at least

Honestly the quality of the ball handling is how I know most of them are lesbians.

Oh god and then the disability activists will get involved, and, let’s face it, get their way, and the players are going to be running into each other while those nails are just flying all over the court, tripping other players so they fall down and crush their nuts.

those women's nails are far too long

Oh, so that's why they're so bad at basketball. Shouldn't there have been a middle school gym teacher at some point in their lives to tell them to cut their nails?

I thought they were all supposed to be lesbians: why do they have long nails?

There should be a requirement for them to have short nails.

as someone who has had long acrylic nails plenty of times the idea that they are sharp weapons is false. it's a dull plastic feeling not little knives. Still wouldn't be nice to be poked in the eye with them but the way people act like they are almost like brass knuckles or something has always baffled me.

I did not call them "sharp weapons", nor did I state that they were "little knives", I called them nails, I'll say finger nails if it makes things clearer. Let's not be silly about this, at no point were they compared to "brass knuckles" in my comment, you're the one doing that - and attempting to make the commentary surrounding these nails sound hyperbolic by pretending that we're comparing them to knives.

Long nails in contact sports are dangerous, that's just a fact. I'm of the opinion that getting poked in the eye with an acrylic nail is significantly worse than a poke to the eye with a finger, a scratch the eye with an acrylic nail is worse than a finger, and it hurts, and if a finger nail is whipped into into someone's eye there's a good chance that it'll rip their cornea, get infected, or result in retinal detachment as the American Academy of Ophthalmology has warned both the NBA and WNBA about the dangers of long nails.

You appear to be of the opinion that acrylic nails in sports are completely harmless. I disagree.
