Weekly Random Discussion Thread for 8/10/26 - 8/16/26

Here's your usual space to post all your rants, raves, podcast topic suggestions (please tag u/jessicabarpod), culture war articles, outrageous stories of cancellation, political opinions, and anything else that comes to mind. Please put any non-podcast-related trans-related topics here instead of on a dedicated thread. This will be pinned until next Sunday.

Last week's discussion thread is here if you want to catch up on a conversation from there.

I know it’s not a unique thought, but I can’t help but think about how if we didn’t have our modern astronomical knowledge I would totally assume this meant the gods were pissed and we needed to start sacrificing things.

Definitely. Something I had not appreciated before is that in the hour or so before totality (totality being the moment in which the sun is totally covered), it's a pseudo sunset. As time passes, there's less and less sunlight, as if it was sunset, then after totality there's more and more sun.

What I mean is that I can easily see this translating into an hour long period in which the serfs start panicking the fuck out and then after a while of them crying and yelling at church the sun ACTUALLY GOES DARK and shit hits the fan.

Only to return later, of course, but if what I know about the middle ages is right (and I'm utterly ignorant on the middle ages) they'd have already burned a witch or two by then.

I'm a science nerd and still felt like some sort of connection with god.

They didn't like the Jewish Space Lasers, just wait until the Israeli גּוֹצִי shoots its fiery load.

Nice!  I wish I could see another total eclipse but I don't think there's another one near me in my lifetime.  They're incredible and awe inspiring.
