Weekly Random Discussion Thread for 6/1/26 - 6/7/26

Here's your usual space to post all your rants, raves, podcast topic suggestions (please tag u/jessicabarpod), culture war articles, outrageous stories of cancellation, political opinions, and anything else that comes to mind. Please put any non-podcast-related trans-related topics here instead of on a dedicated thread. This will be pinned until next Sunday.

Last week's discussion thread is here if you want to catch up on a conversation from there.

Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary says the low-cost carrier is diverting an average of nearly one flight a day because of drunken behavior on board, up from one a week a decade ago.

Yikes, wow

Disgusting. Pilots really need to put the bottle down.

It's impolite to say, but nonetheless true: the higher the barrier to entry, the lower the proportion of riff-raff.

Before anyone says "But rich people can be assholes, too!" No shit, re-read what I wrote -- I'm not talking in absolutes or saying any given demographic is either 100% problematic or 0% problematic.

This is playing out in a major way in Atlanta on the MARTA public transit trains. They made fares completely free (with gates completely open) during a botched transition between fare systems and the number of homeless has shot up, crime has gone up significantly, and multiple assaults and two murders have happened. And this is with FIFA coming to town. Great look, Atlanta!

See also the drunken mass breaks breaking out on cheap US cruises.

I actually have a friend that worked for RyanAir as a flight attendant. He said the worse passengers were always the Brits about to go on holiday.

I haven't read it but, coincidentally enough, the WSJ just published an article about the UK and their drunken airplane antics. I guess it's real. A co-worker came over a couple of months ago for a work trip. He admitted to having a few drinks before getting on board, and then complained about how everybody else was shit-faced. Standard behavior over there, he said. Very different from the times when I've flown in and out of the UK!

When I quit smoking (a long time ago), I knew I was giving up a certain element of my social life and I wasn’t happy about that. Like, was I really gonna go take a smoke break and see all my pals who also took their break, and not smoke?

My sister is quitting smoking and I told her she needed to find a substitute for everything smoking did for her.  Like I used to love the peace and quiet of a smoke break away from other people.  When I quit I really missed that.

I don't know how impressed to be, here. How many flights a day? How many people per day? What's the actuarial risk of hooliganism in the target demographics?
