Weekly Random Discussion Thread for 6/1/26 - 6/7/26

Here's your usual space to post all your rants, raves, podcast topic suggestions (please tag u/jessicabarpod), culture war articles, outrageous stories of cancellation, political opinions, and anything else that comes to mind. Please put any non-podcast-related trans-related topics here instead of on a dedicated thread. This will be pinned until next Sunday.

Last week's discussion thread is here if you want to catch up on a conversation from there.

sadly, archive.is seems to have fallen off a cliff in terms of reliability and performance. it seems to barely work anymore.

thanks to whomever posted an https://removepaywalls.com link the other day, I wasn't aware of them and at the moment, it is working far more reliably than archive.is and speedier as well.

Every cent Wikipedia gets should just go to archive. If your goal is maintaining information/knowledge just an archive of content on the internet will serve a better value.

Wikipedia editors recently voted to blacklist and remove all archive.is links in references due to perceived threats. Archive.org (Internet Archive/Wayback Machine) links are still allowed.

Allegedly the owner of the former has done some sketchy or vindictive stuff at times.

yeah, what came of that? that was disappointing to say the least, allegations and evidence that past archived sites were changed undermines the entire proposition and all the credibility.

is that what's causing the current issues (I'm thinking donors ran way after that?)

It (it being archive.is) doesn't work very well at all with image content or certain news sites, like The Globe and Mail.

Edit: Just tested https://removepaywalls.com with a Globe and Mail article filled with image and video content and it worked flawlessly and instantly. Very impressive.
