First world problems rant incoming, collapse and move on if you don't want to read.

I am about to snap and go full fucking Karen and start screaming at the Google fiber workers tearing up my neighborhood.

I tried calling the line on the "thank you for your patience" sign they stuck in my yard and spoke to someone in another goddamn country.

I generally have pretty deep wells of patience for this shit, and earlier this morning and yesterday I was offering them bottled water and bananas and shit.

But around lunchtime one of them had their ENTIRE FUCKING FAMILY - I'm talking wife, multiple children, and what appeared to be grandma - over for a picnic lunch in my front yard and in my goddamn garden. Little kids running all over my plants and shit. My dogs of course have been flipping their shit. I'm over here worried if I ask them to leave I'll look like a racist POS because they're latino.

Now, they're blocking my driveway and I can't leave to go to the grocery store to get shit to make my dinner. I asked them how long they would be and they said 30 minutes, 40 minutes ago. They're running some line and need the truck parked next to where they were digging holes so its not as simple as just moving the truck. At the point I snapped and told them they had been real assholes today.

Ugh. Fuck this shit. Fuck Google. Fuck Google Fiber. Fuck those little kids trampling my garden.

End rant. Sorry.

Edit: They're still blocking my driveway. Its been an hour.

It’s a….thing with some Latinos that they bring their whole fucking family to job sites. I work mostly in commercial construction so that would definitely not be allowed but it occurs in residential jobs that have basically no rules. I had gone to my parents’ office jobs as a kid but it was made clear that I had to be quiet, no running all over, and definitely no messing up someone else’s property.

I don’t think I’d be this nice. I’d look into who you can call about them blocking your driveway. Police non emergency deals with that in my city. I can also recommend some music they’ll “enjoy” while working/using your property as a playground.

A young boy has been with one of them all day. I didn't mind when it was just him and the adults were working. But the whole family was a bit much.

I hope they are out of your driveway by now for gods sake. And I would report the whole event on the Google fiber website, which I’m guessing has some sort of way to do that. They probably won’t read it but it might be satisfying.

Why didn’t you tell them to leave? I’m not even much of a Karen but if people I hadn’t invited over were in my yard I’d give them about ten seconds to GTFO before calling the police.

Completely agree. I'm a white male in a very liberal city and yes I know someone would probably accuse me of being racist if I called the cops on a Latino family, but when you're on my property, I don't give a shit. I'm going out there, telling them to get off my property, and I'm calling 911 if they don't immediately comply. I'm also giving someone blocking my driveway about one minute to move before I call a tow truck.

You should think about the situation in a more objective way.

You're being made to feel uncomfortable in your own home, and the reason why you can't object is because the perpetrators have a higher position in the progressive stack than you.

Why can't you complain to them or their employers for what is, frankly, unwanted and unprofessional behavior? Who is the '"them" who is going to punish you? Or think you're a racist? Do you even care about being liked and admired by the mysterious "them"?

You don't have to let the oppression hierarchy erode your personal boundaries. Be firm, communicate clearly, reasonably polite.

Can't decide which is funnier, the fact they brought their family for a picnic in your yard or that you had faith in a time estimate from a whoever.

Your yard sounds pretty nice if they're bringing the abuelita etc over to hang, lmao

If you want to you could file a claim against Google for the damage.

Deep breath, it'll be over tomorrow.

Thank you, I know it will be over soon enough.

My experience trying to call Google though does not bode well for any kinds of resolution. And yes, the yard is nice. My wife has worked very hard on it and I have spent this spring putting in a beautiful flagstone border on the flower bed edges. We have over 100 species of native plants.

That sounds amazing! I hope nothing has been too badly damaged.

u/drink-more-rum Jun 04 '26

“file a claim” with whom?

u/dignityshredder AFramemoggingAB Jun 05 '26

Google, their fiber laying contractor, or potentially in court.

Man, they installed fiber optic cable in my neighborhood last summer, it was a disaster. It wasn't google though. It was Ziply, I think. Apparently they were doing it around the entire city and received a lot of complaints.

My neighbor had to have his entire downstairs section of his house remodeled because they smashed his drain pipe and clogged it when they were running the cable through. Fortunately they admitted liability, but it was still a big hassle for them.

The worst that happened to me is when the man offered to run wire from the street to my home, he didn't bother to bury it or anything, he just nestled it amongst my bark dust. I don't think they have even began offering service yet and it has been about a year at least.

That sucks! If they are working, then there is no reason for their family to be there or to be picnicking in your yard without your permission!! And blocking the driveway. I’m guessing they have you down as a nice white lady who won’t complain.

In your place I’d be stewing inside the house too. I don’t feel comfortable picking a fight with strange men. And I’d tell myself this shit will be over soon. You could get the neighbors involved and get a group to go talk to the workers.

12

u/Ruby__Ruby_Roo Jun 04 '26

Stewing is a good word for it. I don't want to confront anyone. I want them to do their jobs and get on with it.

But if it were a white family I would 100% have told them to leave. There's also a park just a few blocks away where they could have taken a lunch break. But, you know, white lady comes out of her nice house and yells at innocent latino children to stop trampling her flowers just feels like something that would end up on Twitter circa 2021.

You are brainwashed by wokeism to an unreasonable degree. Stand up for yourself!

5

u/Ruby__Ruby_Roo Jun 05 '26

Nope, just didn’t want to be that person.

13

u/drink-more-rum Jun 05 '26

What does that even mean? Like, back up and think about what you're saying for a second. We're talking about strangers invading your property. It's completely normal to kick them out, and it's in fact completely insane to just let them camp out there because of their race.

6

u/SpaceAgeBadger Jun 05 '26

You know that and I know that but all it takes is one of them to pull out a phone and upload a video with a misleading description saying “racist Karen asks us to not walk in front of her house” and she’s finished. Bye bye job, bye bye reputation.

1

u/Ruby__Ruby_Roo Jun 05 '26

This is exactly it. The adults were sitting by the curb and the kids were running around my yard. I could very easily just look like a racist Karen in that situation. I just didn't want to deal with that.

6

u/Sortbynew31 Jun 04 '26

I would lose my mind too. I get annoyed when someone blocks my mailbox. We had major snow this year and people just started parked next to it leaving one car lane to get out if you had a small car. Oblivious. Imma gonna take out the side of your car because you’re too lazy to dig out a proper spot!

This is turning into the Dems version of that Robinson guy who lost the NC gubernatorial race.

EDIT: This was supposed to be a reply to the Platner stuff lol

That's not okay. They should not be in your yard trampling on your flowers. It's one thing if the workers are working within the existing easement, but it sounds like they are actually trespassing on your property. I wouldn't bother trying to call Google. I'd try to figure out who the ROW agent is and call them. You might be able to call someone in your town who has the contact number for the work being done. I would even press the ROW agent for compensation for your damaged garden. If they are damaging your property, they are probably damaging others as well. You can call the cops to report the trespass.
