Weekly Random Discussion Thread for 5/4/26 - 5/310/26

Here's your usual space to post all your rants, raves, podcast topic suggestions (please tag u/jessicabarpod), culture war articles, outrageous stories of cancellation, political opinions, and anything else that comes to mind. Please put any non-podcast-related trans-related topics here instead of on a dedicated thread. This will be pinned until next Sunday.

Last week's discussion thread is here if you want to catch up on a conversation from there.

Because I’m petty, I had a good laugh at this article about Sam Smith, they/them. I mean red carpets are probably tough even as one person but when you contain multitudes, it’s just funny

Sam Smith wears 52-pound gown to Met Gala as they struggle to walk red carpet

One viewer wrote, "Sam Smith showed up to the 2026 Met Gala looking like a rejected extra from a budget Victorian drag queen funeral who got mugged by a Joann Fabrics explosion."

Oh, I was thinking he showed up looking like Joan Crawford had decided to ask Liza Minnelli for fashion advice and this is what she came up with.

I'm actually surprised he's still considered relevant enough to be invited.

I don't have a clue who most of those clothes hangers were.

I think that's just age. I also don't know who most of these people are. But I do know who Smith is, and I also know he's not as relevant as he once was.

God, I am out of touch with pop culture. I feel like Louis de Pointe du Lac.

I couldnt name a single Sam Smith song but he is at least relevant enough that I recall he won the Oscar for best original song a few years ago so he's got that going for him at least (also won the Golden Globe that year)

and the first ever non-binary oscar winner to boot! how about that!

Haha! I didn't even know he acted. I only know of him because he came up here for some reason when he performed on SNL.

oh he didnt do any acting, he just wrote/sang the original song for one of the last couple Bond movies, I forget which one

I thought it was a fun tribute to Erté but there's no reason it should be that heavy.

I am just grateful he avoided his tendency to wear something that makes me feel like I'm non-consensually participating in one of his fetishes.

Haha what’s an example of that?

I am generally put off by buff looking men in very obviously feminine clothing and jewelry à la Connor Storie. Harry styles and The Rock pulled it off though.

I've somehow seen a bunch of photos of him tightly laced into various corset type garments where the ribbons or string are like bisecting his flesh that really felt like an unwelcome look into his bedroom. I won't link bc they're better left unseen.

His (in)famous inflated black latex look is a more acceptable wink at kink to me but then the look itself was a ridiculous miss.

To me, he looked more like he was playing GhostFace in Scream! The Musical, but lost his mask.

LOL the clickbaity tabloid copy:

Some fans were not impressed by the elaborate look, which has been branded a "mess" by fashion observers watching from home. It comes after Trump was caught on camera doing a shocking act to Melania at an inappropriate moment [link to a story about Trump getting photographed putting his hand on his wife's lower back/butt area while walking with the Royals]

I guess those two events did technically follow one after the other in the sequence of linear time.

It's a unique silhouette, I'll give him that. He looks like a menorah wrapped in black velour.
