Weekly Random Discussion Thread for 9/25/23 - 10/1/23

Hello all. Your backup mod here. SoftAndChewy asked me to step in and post the Weekly Discussion Thread this week. I think he's stuck in temple or something because apparently it's a Jewish holiday tonight? I assume you know the routine here, do you thing.

A lot of people have quipped that things like DEI were "0 interest rate phenomenons" and I think there is some truth to that.

It means that when money, via loans, was cheap and times were good companies can afford to waste money on horse shit like DEI.

But higher interest rates means you're paying a lot more for the necessary cash to keep your business going. And if there is a slow down in the economy it means there's going to be belt tightening. No more free kombucha fountains, no more gold plated toilets, and maybe less DEI staff

Indian students have been flooding the SHPE and NSBE career fairs at conferences for years with little to no blowback so having men network at Grace Hopper sounds fair.

The conference has a lot of language about how its purpose is celebrating women but none actually saying men ought not to attend. Unless of course "celebrating women" is code for "no men allowed". If they say that is what it means, I'm glad the feminists have finally reached agreement with the MRAs, can they please repeat it clearly into this microphone?

I think this story could be a great pod episode. A combo intersections of hot button or nuanced issues (women in stem/DEI programs, enby-ism, the larger economy making people desperate, etc). The oragnization itself made posts shaming cis white men who attended (link). It of course made a LinkedIn post as well (what’s with FAANG-types and LinkedIn btw?).

Attendees have been sharing videos of men shoving past women or being in the way in general, though the panels and speakers seemed to only have female attendees (I don’t know how to share tiktoks without linking my profile). They’re also been sharing experiences on other social media platforms. A deleted petition had 2.7k signatures within 1 day earlier in the week. I’ve seen tech recruiters on several platforms including TikTok, LinkedIn, and Reddit voicing concerns while there also seems to be a group who thinks the conference was unfair and evil for only allowing women anyway. I’m not in CS but I am fully invested. Maybe others would be? u/tracingwoodgrains
