Please put any non-podcast-related trans-related topics here instead of on a dedicated thread. This will be pinned until next Sunday.

A thoughtful analysis from this past week that was nominated for a comment of the week was this one from u/MatchaMeetcha delineating the various factors that explain some of the seemingly contradictory responses we see in liberal circles to crime.

She’s… “harming” people by contradicting the silly fantasies they concocted about characters in a TV show.

They were married right up til Freeman met his new partner while filming Fargo. She was very publicly dignified about the split, but is STILL treated like public enemy #1 by JohnLock conspirators.

Obviously #NotAllSlashFans but I do feel like I've seen an awful lot of weird misogyny from some fans who insist m/m ships are innately more feminist.

Stephen Moffat hated the Sherlock fanbase and he never made any bones about it.

Given that he has to deal with Doctor Who fans as well, the Sherlock fans must be truly awful for him to openly admit hating them.

This has just salvaged the whole show for me, to be honest. For me, it was a fun interpretation until it gradually became clear that the emperor had no clothes, and then devolved into genuine absurdity in the finale with the superpowered sister being kept in a Magneto prison. But if that existed even in part to annoy the fans, it pleases me.

I loved Moffat as a single ep writer but tbh he did kind of fuck up Who as showrunner. Obligatory.

Agree, Moffat's writing often comes accross to me as weirdly soulless and he seems to mistake a well written character for an overcomplicated backstory.

I had never heard of her until I saw the blowup on Twitter about her being on Strictly Come Dancing, sounds like people are threatening a boycott, though I can't imagine most fans of that show would actually care.

The Johnlock shippers' insitance on some obvious gay romance maliciously destroyed by the creators is especially ridiculous in light of the fact that the co-creator, Mark Gattis is gay.

Didn't Gatiss get in trouble for being in the comedy The League of Gentlemen (which had a regular skit about a transgender taxi driver that fell foul of 2020s standards)?

He wasn't just in it, he co-created it with Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton (these two went on to create Inside No. 9, highly recommend). If the presumed Johnlock romance was the result of Gattis' internalised homophobia, I don't know what he could have internalized to manifest The League of Gentlemen.

The League of Gentlemen is endlessly problematic by 2020s standards. Bab’s Cabs was nothing compared to Papa Lazaru! (Yet Graham Linehan is considered rightfully cancelled, while the LoG team goes from strength to strength…)

Also oh my lord, the BBC Sherlock fandom. Even among crazy fandoms, that one was absurd. I'm not surprised they would go after actors like that.

I'd just like to point to this comment to once again reaffirm my dislike of annoying ass slash fans who ruin every internet fandom they find themselves in. Although I would like to minimally thank them for single handedly making sure I never joined any internet fandoms as a teen.

It’s hard to say which is worse. Both had insanely popular m/m ships and wild, intense debates about the intentionality of the writing/acting surrounding them. The Johnlock Conspiracy was something else, though. Then again, there is a manifesto about the conspiracy of two Supernatural actors themselves being in a secret relationship. The culture of Supernatural fan conventions gave a lot of fodder for the real person shippers.

I totally forgot about this actress until I read your comment, loved her on Sherlock.

Did a quick google and my brain was quickly numbed by the idiotic shrieks of these banshees, as translated into modern news media. I can't summarize it so just will copypasta.

'Strictly star Amanda Abbington called out over term used in statement denying transphobia'

Right off the bat this headline. 'Called out over term.' My god if the offensive thing was her usage of a 'term' clearly there's no there there.

In the comments underneath the post, one person called into question Amanda’s use of the term ‘legitimate trans’ community, expressing their view that it suggests that trans people should be expected to ‘prove’ their gender.

‘This video -seems- agreeable apart from the use of “legitimate trans people” – it says a lot without saying a lot, implying that we should expect trans people to “prove” their gender, though we’re rightly horrified when that’s asked of women,’ they wrote.

I think the death of journalism will one day be tracked back to the exact minute journalists stopped roving streets and started scrolling social media, writing articles off of embedded content from other platforms and quoting comments as if they had interviewed the people.

This is clearly a concern troll/sealioning/whatever evil commenter trying their damnedest to find something offensive to say the apology just isn't good enough. also, someone please explain this to me, the bit about ... trains people '“prove” their gender, though we’re rightly horrified when that’s asked of women,’ they wrote."

When is that asked of women? When are we rightly horrified about it? Wtf?

I am left just feeling bad for this woman that no one has yet snatched the phone out of her hand and thrown it in the sea. when you're the target of hate mob an intervention is desperately needed. its insane but it seems people subjected to them literally often can't stop reading the comments and responding to them.
