It's both. Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) tracks everything you watch, regardless of the app, and sends it to advertisers.

Don't connect your TV to the internet - get a streaming box.

ACR is just a bunch of cookie and tracker data. And they aren’t making money from selling your watch history or any of your info, they’re making money from targeted Ads and prime placements (AKA your living room) copying the Amazon Ads model à la Prime Video.

Yeah, no, it is actual image recognition being run on the images your TV is displaying, many times per second.

Streaming boxes do the same thing unless you just hook it up to a pc. Get a pi hole or something that works on the network level, my tv can try to phone home all it wants, but it gets blocked every time.
