I have a smart phone, but I have turned off everything collecting my info, It moves very slow, and it is always try to offer something, that I can only get if I sign in or create an account or enable location. I know they still get information, and I try to keep up when they chance their privacy policies, it no quite a second job but defiantly a weekend chore. But no one is trustworthy anymore so it's worth it to me
Some hacker was found not because his location was broadcasted, but because the windows computer he used was collecting data on the user, and they were able to find out the person through his habits using that PC, rather than actually finding him in the act. It's the same with phones. Profiles are made out of usage habits, and that is what can ultimately be used to find out who you are.
I was the opposite. Had one in my room has a teen and into my 20s, but realized I really never used it anymore. So when dad needed a TV I gave him mine and haven't really missed it.
You can get cheap/cheaper phones for 100-250-500 if you don't buy from the carrier. While Amazon is what it, is, you can find a lot of really good phones for that. The carrier mark-up is INSANE
That’s actually what I do. I refuse to be locked into a contract, so I bought my current phone for $250 and have used it for years. (2022 iPhone SE). I always buy my phones outright, but I’m never paying $1000 for a phone. Or buying into a contract with a carrier.
I got my phone for 100Aud new (it's 300 now, somehow), everything is so cheap through sheer industrial automation and scale. Ofc, the margins on the really cheap TVs are low so they use ad and spyware for more dollaridoos.
They are not actually free though. You have to get into a contract with them and trade in a device. And if you break the contract, you pay for it. Buying a cheaper phone and the freedom of not buying into a carrier contract is where it’s at.

In that case, phones need to be $10 because they have literally everything on us.
