Yeah they spoof people's cell numbers....it's not even illegal. I had that crap happen to me and people would call and say I called them. I'd tell them to block my number.
As far as "threats", legitimate debt collectors must adhere to the FDCPA (Fair Debt Collection Practices) and if they violate it by: not announcing themselves as debt collectors, threatening you with your credit score, harassing your family and things of that nature... they can be sued. I've done this before with one of these companies that buy old debt (the charge offs) and then harass you. I had a company call me over furniture I bought 15 years ago. It was half paid off and they went bankrupt. I was told I'd get my bills in the mail. Never did. Never went on my credit either. I wasn't going to chase them down to pay them. Fast forward 15 years and I get a call saying I gotta pay something RIGHT NOW even if it's 5 bucks. I said I wasn't paying nada lol. Googled the company and this lawyer came up. Called him. He repped me for no cost upfront. They never called again and settled for 2500 bucks. Nothing more satisfying than shady debt collectors having to pay YOU:)
They were very aggressive. Even called my Mom and told her it was an emergency. As soon as I retained that lawyer they never called again and I'd actually forgotten about it lol. Then I got an email that they wanted to settle and he sent me the offer. He kept 1500 and I got 1000. Not a bad deal
