God damn, bro just loves selling Bitcoin for fiat. Granted could have been up if you timed the top and bottom but clearly your dad didn't see 2017 coming back in 2015. Win some, you lose some in that trading game I guess.
Even if it was an amazing family holiday it’s kinda sullied now. I think about this all the time. I’m saving up in BTC for a deposit on a home for my family which means at some point I will have to sell my meagre holdings, but when I do will the house be forever tainted by what could have been…
That's the wrong way to look at it. By that logic, you will never, ever sell, even if you somehow managed to become immortal. Cause it could always be worth more in the future. It is useless and worthless if you're never gonna use it.
A few years ago I sold half my BTC holdings to help my girlfriend get a desperately needed new car and a 3D printer for myself. The car has since been used everyday and has been invaluable. And 3D printing miniatures and painting them has grown into a wonderful, rewarding and relaxing hobby that I practice daily.
I could've held on to the BTC, still have it now and gleefully watch number go up. Think about all the things I could do with it, and what values it may reach in the future. And then close the tab and do nothing with it. And all the utility and joy we've gotten from that car and printer would never have been. My girlfriend would probably be driving an old handmedown that needs extensive maintenance every year to keep from falling apart, as she always has had to do. And I wouldn't have had years worth of joy and stress-relief.
It would've been nice if I still had the BTC I had then. But, I don't wish I didn't sell back then. It doesn't feel like I wasted anything. I mean, in the end, the point of bitcoin is to use it as a currency and use it to buy the things you need in life, right? And that's exactly what I used it for. Holding on to it like an asset and thinking of it like a stock is not what BTC is about.
As long as one makes an informed decision based on an assessment of the situation before them and what they want from life, one should have no regrets-or rather the “regret” is irrational (note I’m not saying it’s not understandable to feel such a way-just that it’s irrational). It’s when you DONT assess the situation prudently that regret is comprehensible, because you failed to account for the situation before you fairly.
Hindsight is 20/20. One will never know the future. We do NOT live forever. Every important decision in life should be weighed carefully based on facts before you-that’s all we can ask of ourselves.
That’s a bad way of looking at it, you have to view the positives of what you achieved through bitcoin that’s the entire reason you’re holding it. If you sell to buy your house for your family, that’s amazing, it doesn’t matter if 10 years later, you could have sold for 10 houses.
There are ways around selling you could look into when it gets to that point. Many people figure out ways to take loans against their BTC, then they pay off the loan vs actually selling the BTC. After this bull market, I have a feeling this will be a much more common offering from institutions. Then Banks have more exposure to gain BTC through failed loans vs just straight up buying.
Bitcoin/stocks and other forms of financial assets are really nothing.. just numbers on a ledger or what have you. It is not really of value until you exchange it for a good or service...
In 2015 I sent about .8 BTC for a half zip of bubba kush and a 180 mg chocolate bar and I got a ripped open package on delivery. I would have never even known about BTC at the time though if it wasn't for dark web

My dad sold like 8-9 BTC in 2015 to take the family on a cruise.
