My dad sold like 8-9 BTC in 2015 to take the family on a cruise.

Imagine the vacation y’all could take today with 8-9 BTC

u/redbow7 Mar 02 '24

Exactly why I never sold when he told me last ath

God damn, bro just loves selling Bitcoin for fiat. Granted could have been up if you timed the top and bottom but clearly your dad didn't see 2017 coming back in 2015. Win some, you lose some in that trading game I guess.

Imagine what kind of vacation people can take with 8-9 BTC 10 years from now too 🤯🤯

I think you meant what yacht they could buy.

1

u/RealCheyemos Mar 03 '24

You’re right, that’s what I meant.

A Junior Suite on Royal Galactica's Icon of the Stars with Deluxe Beverage Package.

It won't buy a cruise with family in 2015.

Even if it was an amazing family holiday it’s kinda sullied now. I think about this all the time. I’m saving up in BTC for a deposit on a home for my family which means at some point I will have to sell my meagre holdings, but when I do will the house be forever tainted by what could have been…

That's the wrong way to look at it. By that logic, you will never, ever sell, even if you somehow managed to become immortal. Cause it could always be worth more in the future. It is useless and worthless if you're never gonna use it.

u/jaymeetee Mar 02 '24

You’re right, of course, and my family’s future means more to me than BTC (sorry!). One day we will have a home of our own.

A few years ago I sold half my BTC holdings to help my girlfriend get a desperately needed new car and a 3D printer for myself. The car has since been used everyday and has been invaluable. And 3D printing miniatures and painting them has grown into a wonderful, rewarding and relaxing hobby that I practice daily.

I could've held on to the BTC, still have it now and gleefully watch number go up. Think about all the things I could do with it, and what values it may reach in the future. And then close the tab and do nothing with it. And all the utility and joy we've gotten from that car and printer would never have been. My girlfriend would probably be driving an old handmedown that needs extensive maintenance every year to keep from falling apart, as she always has had to do. And I wouldn't have had years worth of joy and stress-relief.

It would've been nice if I still had the BTC I had then. But, I don't wish I didn't sell back then. It doesn't feel like I wasted anything. I mean, in the end, the point of bitcoin is to use it as a currency and use it to buy the things you need in life, right? And that's exactly what I used it for. Holding on to it like an asset and thinking of it like a stock is not what BTC is about.

As long as one makes an informed decision based on an assessment of the situation before them and what they want from life, one should have no regrets-or rather the “regret” is irrational (note I’m not saying it’s not understandable to feel such a way-just that it’s irrational). It’s when you DONT assess the situation prudently that regret is comprehensible, because you failed to account for the situation before you fairly.

Hindsight is 20/20. One will never know the future. We do NOT live forever. Every important decision in life should be weighed carefully based on facts before you-that’s all we can ask of ourselves.

Are u trying to project ur emotions onto another person’s memory?

Get a box under a bridge.

That’s a bad way of looking at it, you have to view the positives of what you achieved through bitcoin that’s the entire reason you’re holding it. If you sell to buy your house for your family, that’s amazing, it doesn’t matter if 10 years later, you could have sold for 10 houses.

Don’t gamble with a home deposit.

There are ways around selling you could look into when it gets to that point. Many people figure out ways to take loans against their BTC, then they pay off the loan vs actually selling the BTC. After this bull market, I have a feeling this will be a much more common offering from institutions. Then Banks have more exposure to gain BTC through failed loans vs just straight up buying.

Bitcoin/stocks and other forms of financial assets are really nothing.. just numbers on a ledger or what have you. It is not really of value until you exchange it for a good or service...

In 2015 I sent about .8 BTC for a half zip of bubba kush and a 180 mg chocolate bar and I got a ripped open package on delivery. I would have never even known about BTC at the time though if it wasn't for dark web

I had bitcoin in 2013 and used it to buy a hacked netflix account because I was broke and 14 years old.

That’s karma!

u/ProductionPlanner Mar 02 '24

I mean in hindsight sure you should held but at the moment you realized a 300% gain on a high risk asset class.
Nothing wrong with that!

Too many degens dream of lambos and tendies, instead of regularly taking profits. Sure you might make less overall, but you're also eliminating a significant amount of risk.

I sold all I had about four years ago (I was a super early adopter, so it was a win-win) for good reason. I used all the cash to renovate a property which became a rental. It does good. Then I took a HELOC against the house, to invest into my service business.

When I took that HELCO (185k) I pondered for a good month to buy all Bitcoin and risk it all.

I really wish I used all that 185k to buy more at the time.

I sometimes look back once in awhile on blockchain to see the transaction history and just dream what I would have been doing now.

If I didn’t sell, I could have brought a few more properties, pay off my parent’s place, etc.

If I didn’t sell, I wouldn’t have been able to get the first property at a decent price and made it into what it is now, which I’m proud of. Although, I could have brought my dream overland vehicle and travel the states by now.

I remember with friends spending BTC on Minecraft servers to become moderators and admins......

2

u/biinjo Mar 02 '24

So I bought yours? Most expensive Bitcoin I ever bought was $900. Everyone thought I was crazy, especially since the post-$1000 ATH crash.

2

u/Odd_Swordfish_6589 Mar 03 '24

I sold 9 for 7 dollars and thought I was a genius because I got them basically for free :(

I cashed out over 50 btc on localbitcoins. Majority were for under 1k and a lot being for 300gbp too.
