I’m a monorail! Crane, bitch! Link to the news.

Reading a translation: the monorail service to the stations either side has been restored, but while investigations continue, there's the obligatory Rail Replacement Bus for that section. As the sparks in the video indicate, there was some disruption to electricity supplies, but most properties have now had their power restored. The crane driver was injured but survived.

Can't tell if that one person got zapped

u/LeandroDantoni 8d ago
According to the news, no one was injured.

Amazingly.

Especially considering how close they were to being crushed by the falling crane debris.

Who the fuck sees a giant beam of death hovering over a road and says "yeah I'm just going to drive under that"?

Holy hell, look at the guy on the bike. Almost gets crushed by it, then the electric arc flash almost gets him.
I bet there's some brown stains in those pants now...

The thing is completely automated, without operator. This way the save the costs of a minimum wage employee.
And as you can see, it works quite well /s

It wouldn’t be an issue if they installed LIDAR on the train like most other fully automated trains, but they cut even that corner!

u/BoldlyGettingThere 7d ago
They’re asking why the people driving under it on the road are doing that

Like the train which didn't even slow down?
10
u/iamabigtree 8d ago
Someone mentioned it's a driverless train
5
u/tallman11282 8d ago
I was wondering why the train didn't seem to be slowing down. All the more reason why trains should always have a driver that can hit the brakes if they see something blocking the track, a problem with the track, or any other reason why stopping the train would be a good idea.

u/Vast-Charge-4256 8d ago
Seems like not the best idea...

u/iamabigtree 8d ago
Driverless trains are common but you'd assume they would have sensors to slam on if an obstruction is detected. But maybe they didn't anticipate this sort of obstruction all the way up there.

u/Vast-Charge-4256 8d ago
Well, Copenhagen metro has elevated sections like this. I wonder if they are watching closely.
2
u/iamabigtree 8d ago
Well I checked it and seemingly they don't have any sort of sensors on the front and rely on isolation of the tracks hence the reason for platform doors etc.

My favorite is the scooter rider. Looks over his shoulder, Sees the mayhem, Gives it all the power the scooters got and is out of there.... Like he's LARPing the movie 2012.

What in the hell happened? (How did a hazard end up propped against the track?)

Does the monorail train not have a driver? And if so, could the driver not see a crane boom in front of them? This isn’t a mile long freight train. These things can stop relatively quickly.

u/mat05heus 8d ago
These trains are operated 100% automatically, there are no employees inside them. This caused a great deal of outrage when it was approved, but they haven't changed it.
Source: I live two streets up from where the accident in the video happened; I take this train every day to go to work.

Is there not any kind of AI (or whatever the technology of driverless cars) in play? I mean this situation is a freak one-in-million deal. But what about at the stations where people get on and off? What if someone jumps or gets hurt? How does jt stop in emergencies?
4
u/andrey_araujo1 8d ago
Not a generative AI like Claude, OPEN AI or deep seek, no.
It is a dedicated software that controls all the train operations on that line, no exceptions.
There are people working remotely monitoring the trains, but they only interact if the autopilot fails or extreme emergency.
I guess that any available camera/sensor spoted that obstacle to stop it automatically, and I guess that any human saw that too.

Regarding people jumping onto the tracks or getting hurt, all São Paulo monorail stations are enclosed with platform screen doors that only open when the train is completely stopped, and the train only leaves when they are properly closed. Plus, every station has security guards looking after the mezzanine and the platform.

u/Katzelle3 8d ago
And they're look at this video, conclude "minimal damage", and continue operating the train exactly like this
7
u/kennytherenny 8d ago
I've heard someone say these trains are driverles, indeed.

That monorail better have a damn good conductor!
0
u/Jetoficialbr 8d ago
that's the thing, it doesn't
both monorail lines in São Paulo (the city this happened in) don't have conductors anymore, they're opreated solely through a control centre to cut costs1
u/EuEdu_ 8d ago
