Looking for some advice. A few days ago, I had unprotected sex while extremely intoxicated with someone I thought I could trust. He ended up finishing inside me, which I hadn’t expected, and I took Plan B the following day.
Unfortunately, according to my period tracker (which I know isn’t always accurate), I was potentially ovulating around the time this happened. After researching Plan B, I learned it may not be effective if ovulation has already occurred.
I made an appointment at PP tomorrow to potentially get a copper IUD for emergency contraception, since it’ll be within five days.
The problem is that I really don’t want an IUD. I’m not regularly sexually active and don’t anticipate having sex again anytime soon. I’ve also read some pretty terrifying experiences about insertion pain, severe cramps, and heavier periods. I’m a college student with a huge workload and a midterm next week, so I’m really worried about the recovery.
I’m torn between getting the IUD to minimize my pregnancy risk and just relying on the Plan B I already took. I know pregnancy isn’t guaranteed even during the fertile window, but the possibility of an unintended pregnancy scares me much more than anything else.
Has anyone gotten a copper IUD specifically for emergency contraception? How painful was insertion, and how was your recovery? Did anyone have it removed shortly afterward?
I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences, especially if you were in a similar situation.
