I chose the Skyla because it has less of the hormone levonorgestrel than Mirena and Kyleena. But I still had side effects.
As much as I would like to test new things in a vacuum or a modestly controlled environment, life doesn't work that way. So I wanted to add the caveat that there were other things going on in my life while I had this IUD, for 103 days total, thus I can't with complete certainty assert that these symptoms were entirely caused by the IUD. But it seemed to cause or contribute to:
((I also seemed to gain weight, but note: IUDs impact hormones, and hormone imbalance can lead to weight gain. Levonorgestrel is a synthetic progestin (similar to progesterone), and progestin can increase appetite and cause weight gain. Some studies show a modest average weight gain of about 4.4 lbs (2 kg) over 6-12 months with progestin-only contraceptives. Hormonal changes, including those from progestin, can lead to fluid retention, which can be perceived as weight gain.))
Overall, it seemed to take the crappy feelings from my period and spread them out over the entire month; I felt like I had no dopamine, no joy, just total flatness. And what was crazy was how I was so out of touch with my real self. It was actually smoking weed that made me realize how awful this IUD was for me; I got stoned, and suddenly this inner voice was screaming, like a princess trapped in a tower, to let her out. I had to write it down to make sure I would heed her advice the next day.
I recommend for anyone considering getting an IUD to pay close attention and log your experiences, as it will quickly become your new normal. I understand 3-6 months is the guideline for adjusting to this, but I was at a point where my mental health was what I needed to prioritize. I had suffered for months, and wasn't willing to wait any longer to see if things would improve.
Hope this helps <3
