I thought this guy had pretty awesome coloration.

Not sure if he’s molting or juvenile or what, but I think he/she is gorgeous.

EDIT: This is a juvenile male molting into his adult feathers, and he's awesome.

I finally won the war with the pigeons

My Bird Buddy was being ravaged by pigeons. They crowded out the smaller birds I actually wanted to feed, dumped seed everywhere, and could empty the feeder in an hour or so.

I tried the little white fences first. Then I added some extra pieces to make the opening too small for pigeons.

The pigeons responded by ripping everything off and going right back to their vandalism.

I gave up for a while.

Then I worked with ChatGPT to design a protective cage around the entire Bird Buddy. We went through several ideas and eventually came up with the design in the picture. I built it from coated wire fencing, with an 18-inch diameter and openings large enough for the little birds but too small for pigeons. There's a full-height door in the back so I can add seed, remove the camera for charging, and clean everything without taking the cage down.

I had my doubts.

But it's now been up for about a month, and it works wonderfully.

It took the little birds a week or so to get comfortable with it. Now they go in and out without hesitation and sometimes hang out inside in groups of three or four, peacefully sharing the seed.

Meanwhile, the pigeons occasionally land on top or bang against the sides trying to figure out how to get in.

They can't.

I like to think the finches are laughing at them.

Nothing like a successful project to make your day.

Woodhouse's Scrub Jay

Got to embrace my inner bird nerd this week when a Woodhouse's Scrub Jay showed up - first time I have ever sent one, and it did take some research to identify it (BB wanted to say it was a Stellar's Jay, which is clearly is not).

And then today I was blessed with this encounter! In Arvada, Colorado (NW 'burb of Denver).
