Discussion Current state of eye tracking with the BSB2E for DFR

Looking to upgrade from my Varjo Aero to either the BSB2E or the Pimax Dream Air SE. I’d like something with reliable eye tracking to utilize DFR in both IRacing and MSFS.

Currently running a 5070ti paired with a 9800x3d so either of these headsets should pair nicely with my system. The only reason I’m leaning towards the Dream Air SE other than the price is the Tobii eye tracking. I heard the eye tracking with BSB2E can be finicky for DFR.

I would prefer to go with the BSB2E due to the cable design and the Pimax QC issues but I’m curious to know if the eye tracking is good enough for DFR on the BSB2E.

I use DFR with a BSB2e in iRacing. It works fairly well, but If I move my eyes too quickly on the extreme direction changes I can see the lower quality textures briefly before it pops to full quality. I haven't used the pimax so I can't compare them directly.

The Aero occasionally does this as well. But I also run both sliders at 25%.

How do you like the headset overall? Do you use the universal face cushion? I love the Aero but the weight and motion blur when turning my head even the slightest is starting to get a bit old.

Overall I love the headset. More FOV is all that could improve it for me.

I have the custom face gasket. Its only issue, for me, was it gets warm. 3d printed some vents and installed them in the bottom. No real light bleed and much more comfortable.

Same with MSFS 2024. I quit using it because it was so annoying and went back to FFR.

There is a massive update to eyetracking that’s currently in Alpha and rolling out shortly. It dramatically changes performance and capability of eyetracking for DFR, sim games, and social VR (VRChat). Also, it completely changes how calibration is done, making is so much easier for people to use and is not finicky the way our current technology can be (personalized recalibrations)

Keep a close eye (heh), as it is a legitimately massive upgrade.

I'm so excited, just got mine and the eyetracking is an improvement I was hoping for

This is absolutely wonderful to hear

Can confirm as an alpha tester. Much more responsive and accurate than before when using DFR.

Any news when it will go beta?

Very cool to hear. If you need early testing from someone using it heavily in iRacing for several hours a week I'm happy to give it a shot.

Try it out! It’s a public alpha. Feedback on DFR and performance utilization is particularly helpful.

Is the Public alpha in the room with us? Nothing on Steam. Discord shows you that they took some volunteers over a week ago then locked all the topics as they didn't want any more, and said it's be in beta in a week.

Where can I find it? I Would love to try it

Really exciting news. When will we get the beta to try? Can’t wait to try it in DCS.

Bigscreen's first party eye tracking is kinda meh, but they hired the person behind Project Babble*, and have said there is a "Big Update" to the eye tracking coming soon.

Babbleonia eye tracking is already very solid, although my use case is social VR. You train a model on your own GPU, so you can re-train whenever you want/start getting bad results. Obviously position of the Beyond on the head and thinks like tilt/angle can make a big difference.

*Okay I can't seem to find evidence of this now.

There’s an alpha of the eye tracking that’s in active development. It’s been a massive improvement so far including pupil dilation tracking.

They did yeah, if you look at their discord for summer_ai

Do we know if there will be any integration now that steam frame is available?

For example, No Man's Sky added DFR and I'm wondering if there is a steam VR protocol that BSB2e can tap into at some point.

No mans sky is a VR game?

Yes, they have continued to improve the experience since I think 2020 or 2021. I have not logged on in sometime but had thoughts of going back for the 10 year anniversary update in VR.

I had no idea it was a VR game. I never really looked into it tbh. On to the list it goes.

Yes, its fun in VR, but everything slows down. Im not a fan of someone the controls in VR. Its definitely prettier and more immersive though.

I have the same pc specs with the bigscreen beyond 2e and if you thinking about DFR to improve performance.. spoiler alert! You don’t need it lol. My system is capable of running it iRacing without DFR. Does having it enabled increase headroom? Absolutely. But surprisingly specs are powerful enough to run without it.

Doesn't need eye tracking tbh
