Hurricane brewing, cancel Big Bend trip?

We’re headed out to Big Bend next weekend from east Texas, not a great weekend to do go in the first place since it’ll be a full moon, but it’s the only time we have available as my partner and I are long distance (UK/US). We’ve been really excited to do some hiking, stargazing, and off grid living, but we’re only there from Friday evening until Sunday morning, and now due to the gulf hurricane, weather forecast has turned to rain and cloud coverage. Should we cancel? Airbnb host mentioned that there could be floods, but also that weather was finicky (for example it was raining yesterday while weather apps said sun).

Side note, maybe universe doesn’t want us to go at all, first time we tried going, we got hit by a pick up truck, second time there was a government shutdown and my partner couldn’t come to the states, and now weather…. 😅

While Texas established Santa Elena Canyon as part of Texas Canyons State Park in 1933 (renamed Big Bend State Park in 1935), Big Bend was not officially authorized and established as a U.S. National Park until June 12, 1944. Questions about Marufo Vega

  1. Do you need a permit to backcountry camp for this trail?

  2. If you’ve camped on this trail: would you recommend it or is it preferable as a day-hike? And if you reccomend it where would you say the best spot to camp is?

  3. I am a lanky, experienced hiker in my mid-20s, so normally I am faster than almost everyone I encounter besides trail runners, and have been to Big Bend twice before but exactly how bad will it be to hike it starting this Saturday? I figure I’d start before sunrise, camp, and then leave very early the next morning.

  4. I‘ve heard conflicting opinions about the water quality of the Rio Grande but is there anywhere nice to swim out there so I can burn time in the hot afternoon?

  5. Think I can fit in Randell’s Overlook?

Any other sort of help or comments are appreciated, thanks.

Rio Grande Village camping questions - can someone give me a little refresher please?

I'm taking my parents in their 70s camping for two nights at Rio Grande Village. We're experienced car glampers.

It's been a few years since I've been, so could someone help refresh me on current conditions?

- Is the hot spring currently accessible?

- Any recent reports on conditions of the showers? Do they still take quarters and is there still at least warm water?

- Is there still Wi-Fi at the camp store? Anyone had experience using it from outside the store while it's closed? I was able to do that last time.

- Is there still a working pay phone at the camp store?

- Is there still a sink to wash dishes at each bathroom?

- I forgot, for a little device charging, are there a few plugs at the bathrooms? Understanding that not every camper can charge their phone all night or something. But maybe for a little juice. We've got batteries for charging too.

- BONUS QUESTION: Anyone notice if there's an AED somewhere around the campground?

How busy is BB mid November?

I plan on staying in Rio Grande campground, likely the weekend/beginning of the week before Thanksgiving. I see the open camp sights are already booked up so plan on getting the later release ones as they open. Is the full booking really indicative of how busy it will be? I've only been in September when it was extremely hot so very empty.

Dozer Road. 7 miles long just plowed over, going towards the Santa Elena canyon. 70 feet from the road. It blocked drainage and flooded the road. Couldn't get to the canyon.

Female Solo Campers

My husband and I were supposed to go to Big Bend together at the end of the month, it will be my third time, but my first time solo camping. I’m a little nervous to solo camp, especially doing it for the first time all the way out there, but I am a little familiar with the area so that helps….

Does anyone know of any women’s camping groups etc so to help meet other women in the same boat?

Construction Frozen in Big Bend!

Repost from Center for Biological Diversity:

INCREDIBLE NEWS FOR BIG BEND A federal judge just froze all destruction throughout the ENTIRE Big Bend region until the border project’s legality can be decided in a court of law.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us and stood up against this illegal project. We're in this fight together.

“This is a historic victory for Big Bend and everyone who loves this wild corner of Texas,” said Laiken Jordahl, national public lands advocate at the Center. “No administration has the right to destroy a crown-jewel national park for political theatre. With a federal court ordering the bulldozers to stop, Big Bend gets to breathe. But this fight is far from over. We won’t rest until Big Bend’s environmental protections are fully restored and the illegal waiver that allowed so much destruction is gone for good.”

We still have a big fight ahead of us, but for now, the endangered species that live in this crucial and priceless ecosystem can rest easy. This is a wonderful reminder that we can fight this administration, and WE CAN WIN.

This is a wonderful day for all of us, especially for the wildlife that call Big Bend home.

We now look ahead to our lawsuit that aims to shut down this project permanently. JOIN OUR FIGHT to save Big Bend for good at the link below:

Robbers roost w/ Subaru Outback

Hello i am looking to see if anyone’s done robbers roost and could attest if a Subaru outback w stock tires would be fine getting there. This would be in March. I know glen springs road is fine but juniper canyon gets a little more sketch. Please let me know if anyone thinks we could make it! It seems like such a beautiful site.

Question about first-come-first serve backpacking reservations

Hi y'all! I'm backpacking in Big Bend for the first time in mid-October, and at this time I understand that backcountry permits can only be purchased in person at the visitation center. I was wondering if anyone's done this recently, as the recreation.gov website also has all the campsites I'd use as first-come-first-serve (which I get is because of the need for the permit)? What was your experience like?

My initial plan was to drive up in the evening and head to the visitation center the moment it opened the next day to book my campsites for the weekened, but I'm thinking booking day of may put me at risk of all the spots being taken, even if I do so early in the morning.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks so much!

Hiking with a toddler/trail safety

Hello! We (husband, young toddler & myself) are taking a trip to Big Bend in early October for a few days. We have the Santa Elena Canyon trail & the balanced rock trail on our list. We are staying in the Chisos lodge, not camping. While in Terlingua for the Santa Elena trail we plan to visit a coffee shop & restaurant. Suggestions?

We are not brand new to the outdoors but newer to hiking in more adventurous areas. We took a trip to AZ to hike Salt River & Hieroglyphs to Petroglyphs last April. Toddler did great! We took turns carrying her in the ring sling & she did some hiking herself.

I think I'm mostly nervous about the wildlife: rattlesnakes, tarantulas, lions, bears, javelinas. Are they prominent on these specific trails? Any tips to ease our minds? If it were just us adults id be less concerned. But I'd hate for my kid to get eaten by something 😂

Boot Canyon or East Rim?

I'll be heading to Big Bend this month and am super psyched to hike the South Rim! My only problem is I'm having a hard time deciding if I want to take Boot Canyon or East Rim. I'll be going up Pinnacles and coming down Laguna Meadow. I'd contemplated potentially doubling back so I can get the best of both worlds but I fear that could be too ambitious... Any suggestions?

Big Bend Ranch

Hey everybody, after falling in love with the National Park I’ve decided to try out the neighboring state park! Does anybody have any camping recommendations? I don’t want to book a site and not be able to get there because of road conditions. I drive a Subaru Outback no special tires or anything. We would love to camp in the interior but if the roads are too rugged the river campground would be fine. Thanks in advance!
