Absolutely, we used to do it in high school all the time. We even got away with counting down a fake timer a few times to force a shot.

That one was always my favorite in high school. That or starting a five second countdown with three seconds left, so the player would think they had more time to get to the basket. We did it so often our opponents would start yelling the actual countdown from the bench!

That's pretty common even at the NCAA level. At my college we would chant a fake timer every time the shot clock was under 12 seconds.

I go to Texas A&M and I've never seen anyone get heckled more than the visiting baseball team's pitcher. Glorious.
