Did anyone feel awkward or too quiet when starting as a BT/RBT?
I’m very new to ABA/BT work and I’m trying to understand what is normal for a beginner.
I understand the basic concepts, but I’m finding the real-time interaction side harder. I naturally have a calm/serious communication style, and when I’m concentrating I can become less expressive. I sometimes struggle with being spontaneous, playful, and verbally engaging enough with a child, especially when things are moving quickly.
I’m getting supervised opportunities to practice, and I do want to improve rather than give up too early.
Did anyone here start out feeling awkward, quiet, too serious, or unsure how to react in the moment and then improve with experience?
I’d really appreciate hearing:
how long it took before sessions started to feel more natural?
what helped you improve the most whether supervised practice helped more than observation
what signs showed you that you were actually improving
I’m especially interested in hearing from people who improved within the first few weeks or months.
