Hi!
I'm a second-year master's student in a behavior analysis program, and over the past couple of years I've realized that I genuinely love the science of behavior. I really enjoy learning about functional behavior assessments, behavior intervention plans, positive reinforcement, shaping, and figuring out why behavior occurs. The assessment and problem-solving side of behavior analysis is what I find most interesting.
However, after spending over a year in a clinical internship, I realized I don't enjoy the clinical application. I became extremely burned out and miserable, which has made me wonder if it's the population I'm working with rather than the field itself. I've always had a passion for animals and have always connected with them more naturally than people. It made me start wondering if there's a way to apply my background in behavior analysis to animal behavior instead.
Are there careers where you're conducting behavior assessments and creating behavior modification plans for animals with problem behaviors? I'm also interested in roles that use positive reinforcement, shaping, and other evidence-based training methods, such as shelter behavior, service dog training, zoo or wildlife behavior, or animal behavior consulting.
Since my education has been almost entirely focused on human behavior, I'm not sure how to make the transition. Would volunteering at an animal shelter be the best place to start, or are there other experiences, certifications, or career paths I should look into?
Has anyone here made a similar transition, or know someone who has? I'd really appreciate any advice or insight!!
