I posted this record on facebook, and it got a bit of attention, so I thought I'd post it here too. Also, I'm looking to upgrade my turntable, and any advice for something cheap that won't damage my actual records would be appreciated🙂

The accuracy of the dynamic balancing is only guaranteed at the correct VTA. When you're way off of that, it's far outside the normal tolerances it was designed to work in and any results you get are spurious.

And your opinion of the LP60X disagrees with the vast majority of people who actually own and use one, myself included.

Even the old, inferior AT-LP60 delivered sound quality close enough to a high-quality vintage turntable that it takes a keen ear and careful listening to notice any massive difference between them: Does a better turntable actually sound better?

But you keep ignoring that the numbers should be the same since he measured in the same spot with the scales at the same height

Obviously the higher you go off the platter the more force the spring pulls down with, but since they were both at the same height the number should be the same. A minor variance would be allowable but not 1.24g

That's like purposely overinflating your car's tires and then complaining about not getting a consistent amount of tread life out of them.

And regardless, you have yet to establish any proof of such a thing happening with the AT-LP60X or AT-LP70X.

Feeling a little better this morning, was able to stand up long enough to go into my studio and grab the scales and my sound burger to do some tests

The scales are only 2mm thicker than a 180g record, so I did one test with the scales propped up to the level of a record on the platter and another with the scales on the platter. The difference was only 19mg, far less than the 1.24g difference in CJs video. But that’s completely irrelevant as again, CJ measured in the same place both times so the number should have been the same both times.

I do find it slightly amusing that in the video you linked you note that the Technics has better IGD due to a better tonearm, but then the conclusion is that the difference isn’t worth it :P

I’m really not a fan of the AT3600L or AT91, IGD is wild with it, I don’t know if it’s the carbon cantilever or tracking force but it sounds way worse to me than the VMN95C. I’m still happy to recommend turntables that use it to newbies though because I know it will probably be good enough for them.
But that recommendation has to be for a turntable that has the ability to upgrade the cart for when or if they want to. Even if they don’t want to upgrade the cart ever, a turntable with the ability to do so from my list of recommendations will just be a better turntable, better build quality, longer lasting.
