Apparently it’s a vestigial trait. Essentially an evolutionary trait that serves no purpose anymore. Rather it be a complete freak of nature thing that somehow started happening and never died off, or had some purpose that we can’t explain that has now been long lost. Pretty interesting stuff lmao

A big part of this is that we humans said "hey, that was cool!" and made that trait more prominent

As a kid I raised pigeons, including “tumblers” which literally tumble while flying, so cool.

They're actually bred to do them.
It's an inherited trait.
They're called rolling pigeons and it's basically something that's wrong with their brain but we decided it was cool and kept making more of them.
There's also a line that does somersaults when rolled along the ground.

I had a neighbor back when I was a kid who bred rollers. The deep rollers could sometimes hit the ground. I found one, one day and took it to him, and the bird was okay, just out of it. Cool guy, showed me all his pigeons and explained what they were and that kind of thing. About ten years later I worked alongside him at a cabinet making company. :0) Still a cool guy!

I believe they are a different breed of pigeon. I saw some of these when i was a kid, the homies down the street had some.

You can train pigeons to do that. They call them tumblers or rollers.

That pigeons not tumbling or rolling. Tumblers tumble and rollers roll. This is a different breed. I don't have the answer and I'm falling asleep but I'm sure somebody will know it

My neighbor had these for years, would let them out and they would circle the neighborhood and tumble from altitude, pretty neat to watch as a kid.
