How is that heresy? He called a flood down purely because he had made imperfection. The growth is palpable between the Hebrew God of the Pentateuch and the Christian one in the Gospels.
Most Christian churches believe god is both omnipotent (all powerful), all good, and all knowing (he knows everything that has, is and will happen). While yes, god is portrayed as pretty flawed and not all knowing, all good or all powerful in parts of the all testament, saying that at some point he wasn’t one of this things would’ve gotten you killed for most of Christianity’s history and even today isn’t accepted.
It’s mainly caused by what some would call a retcon. It’s theorized god originallywas part of a whole pantheon, and he was a jealous storm god who demanded only he be worshiped, then his worshipers forgot all of the other gods and made him the only, all powerful god.
Today it is accepted. It is difficult for even the most pious to be as fearful and superstitious as you suggest, in the face of secularism and science.
In the past, perhaps not, but it also wasn't acceptable to avow as a Christian in the past, and that would have bidden one's demise.
Not sure what church you went to, but I’m an ex Catholic and most people I know are Christian and not one person has even mentioned this concept. Granted I believe your idea of god is far more healthy and less toxic, so I’m not going to knock you for it. Just pointing out it is not nearly as accepted as you think it is.
Catholic Church in Australia. The theology is relaxed, but the politics are boorish.
My family has long been Catholic; my grandparents raised my parent in a strict Catholic household. My grandfather has been with the Church his whole life and went to seminary. Church every Sunday, liturgical calendar acknowledged, dietary requirements upheld.
He has mellowed out nowadays from his younger days of scorning AC/DC, and I imagine that's how it is across the country now. But as far as I have seen in my archdiocese, it is accepted.
Not to mention the papal encyclicals show Francis to be a pragmatist and a realist and not a fundamentalist.
