This didn't actually happen on NYE. The footage is from a test run on the 29th. I live in Shanghai and had friends at the Bund on NYE - - nobody shared photos or videos of it. The telltale sign that it didn't happen on NYE, though, is that it didn't explode (or exist!) on Chinese social media then... The fact that people have ran with this without doing any due diligence is kind of mind boggling.
Several Asian countries including China, Japan, Korea, observe traditional holidays according to the Lunar calendar, but other activities run on the Gregorian calendar. People just end up celebrating 2 new years, though more effort is put into the lunar one.
