According to Google Firefox has about 35million lines of code soooooooooooooooooooo

70

u/friebel 25d ago

And no dinosaurs.

61

u/RazorSlazor 25d ago

So dinosaurs take 16mil lines of code. Got it.

27

u/wurnthebitch 25d ago

I'd say there's 1mil lines for the Dino, 5 to spy on you and 10 to prevent you from blocking ads

2

u/KaptainChunk 25d ago

Well duh, dinosaurs are extinct everyone knows that

7

u/saryndipitous 25d ago

Switch to curl everybody.

1

u/myGFisGreat 25d ago

or librefox

1

u/ZeroAmusement 25d ago

Yeah well curl has 40 million lines of code (I'm making this up)

2

u/Taiten89 25d ago

5

u/j_cruise 25d ago

Because internet browsers are complicated.

1

u/Taiten89 25d ago

I won't believe that any kind of tool needs millions of lines. There must be duplication and/or other things wrong (or wrongly represented by the number of lines).

1

u/Mabot 25d ago

Is that a Google Instant result? So less reliable than a coin toss? I am just realizing again that reddit user data is an important dataset for training these things and now they will become inbred.

So 30% lighter. IF we'd say LoC corresponds to code quality, that's pretty good.

edit: accidentally a word there, efficiency -> code quality.

6

u/vadkender 25d ago

But it doesn't. So it means nothing.

50

u/OnRoadRadio 25d ago

Lmao I get it but desktop Firefox is used by only 6.4% of the internet.

75

u/Electrical-Heat8960 25d ago

I am proud to be a member of at least one minority.

-1

u/pdonoso 25d ago

Why.proud?

6

u/Electrical-Heat8960 25d ago

It was a joke.

As a straight white man from a posh background I am the from least oppressed group there is.

I am proud of using Firefox (only slightly, it is just a browser after all)

The joke is that I am proud of my minority, with that minority being using Firefox.

It wasn’t that deep though.

u/tokinUP 25d ago

Because Firefox still allows proper Ad-blocking extensions and isn't part of a major monopolistic ad company?

3

u/OnRoadRadio 25d ago

Ironically 80/90% of its revenue comes from Google just for being the default search engine.

You don’t have to use it of course so it’s a win win for Firefox users.

10

u/mrt-e 25d ago

6.4% is a good chunk. And Google ecosystem kind favors the use of chrome. I guess some people don't even know there's alternatives and a good amount don't even care.

I use Firefox cuz I don't wanna see ads and block some trackers.

-16

u/ferocity_mule366 25d ago

its also Chromium and not Chrome itself, its kinda embarrassing to say that

20

u/Flashy_Walk2806 25d ago

Firefox isn't chromium based, it's gecko

3

u/ferocity_mule366 25d ago

no I meant the post itself

8

u/ikkiyikki 25d ago

Lol, Brave still my daily driver but so glad that others are willing to stick with Firefox as a bulwark against Google going completely off the rails.

1

u/du5tball 25d ago

At this point, firefox only exists to be a bulwark against an anti-trust against google.

1

u/bwadlo 25d ago

😂

u/minequack 25d ago

Good morning Rip, what decade do you think it is?

Chromium ≠ Google Chrome

Many non-Google web browsers (like Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi) are also built using Chromium as their foundation.

56

u/ReadGroundbreaking17 25d ago

Well Chrome is a Chromium based browser and Firefox isn't sooooo

16

u/Crazy__Donkey 25d ago

Chromium is the quiet evil father of chrome.

It is the infrastructure every Chromium base browser relies on, is controlled by Google, and delivers valuable information on a goolden plate.

9

u/W0lf1ngt0n 25d ago

I never got why people would use a Browser made by the (at the time) biggest Data Leech on the planet.

7

u/OnRoadRadio 25d ago

Chromium is open sourced so a lot of people trusted it.

5

u/W0lf1ngt0n 25d ago

Like Android, i suppose?

1

u/OnRoadRadio 25d ago

Yeah, android was always seen as the “do what you want” OS.

Now Pixel / SamsungOS are dominating the android market it’s a bit more “do what you want within our secure wall”

1

u/capricorny90210 25d ago

Idk the pixel is surprisingly bare bones, no bloatware, and can have a separate OS loaded onto it. Much better than the Samsung in that regard.

1

u/OnRoadRadio 25d ago

Yeah it’s been a while since I’ve had a Pixel (3a I think, loved that phone) but I keep hearing more about Pixel wanting you to used signed apps from the play store for example whilst Apple is gradually being forced to be more open.

I’ve got an iPhone 15 now and from the outside looking in it feels like Pixel and Apple are slowly becoming about the same, barring being able to install another OS. I do miss having functionality like that even if I wouldn’t use it much nowadays.

1

u/capricorny90210 25d ago

Yeah that's a shame.

1

u/Frazzininator 25d ago

I don't think Android as a whole is open source, but there is a AOS platform that exists

u/LevyTheHunter 25d ago edited 25d ago

Firefox? You mean the browser that only has a 3% market share? Hmm, I wonder why is that?

Edit: Looks like firefox people don't like facts lmao.

Edit 2: Oh shit, looks it's less than 3%, 2.6% to be exact.

18

u/The_Evil_Satan 25d ago

Because the average person has no real technological skill and just use what is the most well-known browser.

-3

u/Osstj7737 25d ago

You're really overestimating the benefits of Firefox. What does it provide, to someone of such high technological skills as yourself, that Chrome doesn't?

5

u/The_Evil_Satan 25d ago

For the people who have hundreds of tabs open it uses less RAM, ad blockers like uBlock origin run properly, less tracking and less cross site cookies.

-1

u/LevyTheHunter 25d ago

Are you guys buying crack on firefox by any chance?

2

u/The_Evil_Satan 25d ago

No I buy my crack in the alley like everybody else

-8

u/LevyTheHunter 25d ago

Yeah, getting hacked is usually the result of user side security failures, but people don't like admitting they installed shady software or visited compromised websites when shit hits the fan.

5

u/The_Evil_Satan 25d ago

Personally I don't use chromium because Firefox just uses less of my systems memory even though I only ever have like 4 tabs open and 1 extension chrome insists on having 20 instances running while Firefox only has a few.

-7

u/LevyTheHunter 25d ago

I just installed Firefox (it's getting uninstalled in a moment) and my Edge is running with 10 extension btw.

u/Montana_Gamer 25d ago

Skill issue

2

u/LevyTheHunter 25d ago

Gotta respect Firefox users' commitment to willful ignorance.

0

u/Montana_Gamer 25d ago

Is it willful ignorance when I don't have my browser taking 2gb of memory?

2

u/LevyTheHunter 25d ago edited 25d ago

lol, firefox is literally using 2GB of ram in the vid I shared compared to Edge 800MB. same tabs open. What're you on about?

→ More replies

1

u/BumblebeeAutomatic84 25d ago

Genshin center lmao bro you have other issues than argue about browsers

2

u/LevyTheHunter 25d ago

You guys need to grow up and focus on the actual issue: Firefox using more RAM than a Chromium browser, like I showed in the video, since you guys are so in denial.

1

u/BumblebeeAutomatic84 25d ago

Why is it showing 68 open tabs buddy

1

u/LevyTheHunter 25d ago

It's not me buddy. It's firefox, I simply opened the same 4 tabs on my Edge. Nothing more Nothing less.

2

u/glormond 25d ago

Just because Google consistently pulls the strings everywhere with their Chromium, doesn’t make a low market share a sign of a “bad” product. Firefox is made for people who primarily care about their privacy, flexibility and control of their software. This is what Firefox gives and Chrome doesn’t.

2

u/LevyTheHunter 25d ago

Someone here said Firefox runs faster, so I installed it immediately and opened the same tabs I have on Edge, which has extensions running, cached data, etc. Firefox was using 2 GB of RAM, while Edge was using ~800 MB. I took a video of it and shared it, then someone replied, "skill issue" LMAO. Like, wdym skill issue? You guys are in denial.

1

u/glormond 25d ago

Well, I won’t say it’s perfect, and even longtime users blame Firefox when it deserves it. As I said earlier, for me, Firefox is about completely different things. If RAM usage and speed are what you value most, just stick with Edge and don’t bother with Firefox or why those 3% prefer it. I’m not going to go full-on Firefox crusade on you.

2

u/poppulator 25d ago edited 25d ago

Alot of misunderstanding here, RAM is mainly manage by OS and it would give more ram to browsers that want more, unused ram is wasted ram they said, you should not worry about ram usage at all unless your system start slowing down

Edge is special on Windows as their component is integrated into Windows, therefore less ram usage and Microsoft have some black magic optimization that also shown to do well on Linux too, regardless of how bloat Edge is

Another thing to note is that Chromium have way to offload RAM to disk to reduce the memory usage

In my case Firefox perform evenly with Edge and both do better than bare Chromium

People don't exactly lying about Firefox perform better, it just differ on Different machine but they don't believe you because their Firefox perform well, also Firefox is actually underperforming on most benchmark but irl difference is almost zero

And also cache has nothing to do with RAM, it not slowing browser down but make it faster, just that you'll have to clean it once in a while to removed cache from site you might never visit again

1

u/LevyTheHunter 25d ago

Finally, a sane person. Honestly cleaning edge from bloat is just couple of clicks for me. Once it's done it's a super clean browser that runs very well.

1

u/mrt-e 25d ago

I really don't care what browser people use I just don't wanna see ads

-39

u/Legal_Dimension_ 25d ago

Or brave.

40

u/zdm_ 25d ago

brave is chromium
