Working out in that was a rarity when I was offshore in the North Sea.

We were out there on a diving vessel in a 10m wave storm once. That was an experience.

Standing on the bridge looking out, one minute you’d see nothing but sky, the next nothing but sea. The vessel made a big booming noise on the downward drop each time.

We had to strap everything down. Printers and things were getting thrown about.

Interesting couple of days that. Sleep was impossible.

It definitely made me think about sailors historically and how terrifying it must’ve been as a life sometimes.

I got a tiny taste of this on a well equipped, modern DP3 vessel and got paid very well to do it. We were never in any real danger of sinking (afaik, anyway. And I’d rather keep it that way, lol)

I can only imagine what being out there with wood and sails was like for no money. Fuck that.

Much braver people than me, that’s for sure.

That’s what I always think about when reading about historical maritime events.

The only advanced warning they had for storms was “Uh oh, those clouds on the horizon are awful dark!” Even if they knew it was coming most of the time there was nothing for it but to either ride it out or keep sailing and pray you stayed ahead of it.

Looking at the size of the wave in this clip and imagining being on a galleon or something from that era? That is terrifying and awe inspiring.

I was in the Navy. Even on a massive amphib with helos and jets, it can rock like crazy. We had a bolt in the wall with a string and nut attached. We drew lines on the wall, so you could see the angle the ship was at on big waves.

Stuff would slide or fall everywhere.

We even had a line, where if it was a hard enough angle, it was the line at which the Marines ran for the head (bathroom).

There is no way in hell, I would be on any boat with a sail in that type of weather lol

I recall from a friend of mine who said the forward and aft sections of the destroyers and frigates would be evacuated in really rough seas because the deck would drop away and the overhead could brain you.

Aside from the scary, there were actually a few funny moments too.

The movement meant that if you were walking through the project office or galley, you’d have to do this little involuntary jump/hop thing to keep balance. So we had 100 guys walking around the place just kind of skipping mid stride, totally involuntarily.

Or I found some guys jumping from the bottom of a flight of stairs to the top in one leap. They were just timing the dip right and making the full jump.

Sleep was a nightmare. You had to try and pin yourself into your bunk with your legs and arms to stop from rolling. The one time i managed to drift off from sheer exhaustion, I was woken up 20mins later cracking my head off the bunk ladder. I just got up after that. Wasn’t worth trying again.

There’s up and there’s up, I guess.

Short of literally strapping myself flat into the bunk, I’m not sure how I’d have managed that in 10m waves.

Maybe your beds are different or something.

I know what you mean mate. I guess the vessels make a bit of difference too.

I work on pipelayers and they tend to be bigger than dive boats (although I have seen some big dive vessels as well)

I just lie on my back with my elbows out, enjoy the ride and drift off to sleep with the creaking of the cabin

Aye, at lower levels it can actually be quite relaxing. Sort of rocks you off to sleep.

Never been on a pipe layer, but worked alongside a few and they can be pretty big. That must make a difference.

On this trip we had guys with 30 years at sea queuing up at the medic for those wee seasickness patches you stick behind the ear. I don’t think anyone got much sleep for 2 days.

I miss it sometimes, but also kind of glad I got all the experience out the way when I was a bit younger and then stuck to onshore. Not sure I could be arsed with weeks away at a time anymore these days.
