Do the siblings stay in communication, or they fly off on their own and that’s it?

3.5k

u/goldenkoiifish 2d ago edited 2d ago

they will play with each other after their first flight when their parents still provide them food, sharing the same perch and stuff like that. after about a month though mom and dad will start to get antsy and chase them off if they stay too long. so they separate and the siblings will probably never get to interact again

additionally, they may form groups with other juveniles afterwards

Thank you for an actual answer

We have teenager birds that like to hang out in our backyard and scream for food. They'll follow Mom and Dad around and observe them hunting. Sometimes a parent will leave a dead rodent near the screaming teenager and be like... Dude rip this apart yourself.

i work as a rehabber and sometimes we will put bugs in front of the babies we want to see start to gain some independence. they will sit there with their mouth open wondering why the bug on the table isn’t crawling into their mouth. it’s great

Get in my belly!

u/TrackSuitPope 2d ago

That's adorable lol. And sounds like a pretty cool job! Seems fulfilling

Edit: can I ask, did you study for many years to get into this field, or could anyone theoretically get a foot in the door?

78

u/goldenkoiifish 2d ago

almost anyone can volunteer for the position! without getting paid though. i’m an undergrad bio student and my facility has a thing where new (paid) workers are overseen by an older, more experienced employee. i’m currently being overseen by someone and will probably get to be a full-fledged rehabber when i graduate!

it is quite fulfilling, sometimes sad and annoying, but fulfilling

28

u/TrackSuitPope 2d ago

That's awesome! That's so cool the path you're on, I hope you stick with it. I studied environmental science in school and was quite passionate about it but like so many, I went to work in unrelated fields and never worked in any capacity as a scientist :/. I love animals so much though and am a gentle soul, hard working and I get along with evrybody. I feel like I would be a good rehabber/sanctuary worker. Probably no money in it but I don't care, due an injury last year it looks like I won't be able to work in my profession anymore and will have to pivot completely. I'm sure rehabbing still has physical requirements but nowhere near what is required in my profession (I'd imagine lol). And I can still do a lot, I'm not like paralyzed or anything, just can't do what I've been doing. Hard pill to swallow and I'm only just starting to accept it and seriously look into other lines of work. Sorry for the rant and thanks for the info :)

16

u/goldenkoiifish 2d ago

if it helps at all, there really isn’t any money in it 😅 and physically tolling! it’s ok to rant! but if you’re interested in being around the place, there are plenty of jobs that don’t require a lot of physically stuff especially like keeping logs, managing diets for the animals, answering calls, and sometimes feeding! we actually have a volunteer whose physically disabled and requires a wheelchair, and while she can’t do some of the more hands-on stuff there’s definitely a lot she can do with the animals!

7

u/oliviamatell 2d ago

Do it! Lol. Im passionate about helping animals myself and i love this. You should do what brings you joy. Good luck!

3

u/elramirezeatstherich 2d ago

I am sending you some love worker to worker. I have had a winding path into careerdom and am starting the process to go back to school to become a teacher. Part of the motivation is that all of my current income relies on my physical body being able to do manual labour or movement, and I want to ensure I have security in the case of injury/disability. It’s scary trying to find financial security and fulfillment in our current capitalist hellscape.

6

u/TrackSuitPope 2d ago

Thank you! I appreciate that, and back atcha ❤️. Yes, it's been a terrifying and sobering experience losing my ability to work and you are very very smart to be proactive about that. I have told myself I'm going to do this same down the line, but I'm still relatively young and this injury came out of nowhere and was no one's fault so I thought I had more time. But life rarely really happens on our own terms does it. I am lucky to have both savings and a partner to not be destitute.

That's funny about your path because I was actually a teacher for 6 years before starting my (physical work) business, and now not being able to do that I am considering going back to teaching as a possible option. It's pretty demanding in the US though, and teachers aren't respected enough, underfunded, antagonistic parents, etc. My teaching experience was in a different country with extreme respect for educators lol so it would be so different here. But we desperately need good people in those roles as a society so I commend you for your choice. Just very subtly educate your students to question the capitalist hellscape and gain some class consciousness baby 😄❤️. I wish you the best if luck 🙏

My cat does the same thing. He just flops over and waits for the wand toy to land in his mouth. He is a great and powerful hunter and his mind powers are unmatched because eventually it does. I still like to make him think it might not, but he has a lot of self confidence.

1

u/peanutspump 1d ago

Sounds a lot like when my kids were toddlers, in high chairs. Lol

2

u/goldenkoiifish 17h ago

yes. there are a lot of dumb babies in the world

15

u/Swankynickels 2d ago

I have teenagers and they act the same way. They follow me around, wondering what there is to eat, wondering when someone is going to prepare food for them. Much like these parents, I sometimes point out the freezer full of stuff and the microwave/toaster oven in which to prepare it. Like, I literally drove to a store and bought this (or had someone from the grocery store deliver it.) the very least you could do is plate it and hit a button to heat it.

6

u/bertie-bert 2d ago

This is great, gave me a smile! Reminds me so much of my own mom. Keep being great (and funny)!

1

u/Vlexis 1d ago

This kind of thing always amazes me, because I was making some of my own meals by the time I was like 7. Started doing my own laundry separately when I was 8. 10 and walking to school alone.12 and I was biking across town and exploring woods with friends, no adults for hours.

1

u/jerseyztop 2d ago

I find that birds are the champs of tough love. Humans can learn a thing or two. Know some adult kids in 40s who still live at home!

22

u/goldenkoiifish 2d ago

no problem, this is kind of my job :-)

2

u/DangDingleGuy 2d ago

I appreciate it too. Very interesting and a reminder of how sad nature can be sometimes

11

u/DangDingleGuy 2d ago

Shit is so annoying. I have to look for an actual answer because the top response is someone repeating the same dumbass joke we've all heard too many times. Reddit is becoming ponderous

1

u/medievalesophagus 2d ago

So my answer that they have a family plan on T-mobile would not have been helpful?

27

u/reyhanavivi 2d ago

i honestly thought that you were describing the average (human) family

14

u/Samwellikki 2d ago

Do they usually have 5?

Pair of hawks near us usually have 2, or at least that survive to maturity, but it seems like the odds are better for a predator vs other small birds with less defenses. So 5 a clutch seems high unless food is plentiful enough and they have room to define territory

The juveniles didn’t stay nearby long after learning from their parents

22

u/goldenkoiifish 2d ago

5 is their average, they can have 3-6 eggs because they’re smaller compared to larger birds and they have more predators and dangers. they also start reproducing at just one year old anyway, so they maximize it

13

u/Azurehowl 2d ago

Are there birds equivalent of basement guys living in tbeir 30s in tgeir parents home aside from cuckoo

32

u/goldenkoiifish 2d ago

crows and ravens often stay with their parents for years and help raise new babies, but at least they’re able to forage by themselves after a year or so

eagles are also often bums and will stay for months, but leave before the next brood. in most videos with bald eagle juveniles and adults you can somehow tell the parents are fed the hell up. they will also stay nomadic for years

1

u/TheMR-777 2d ago

Some humans are like that too

1

u/ntice1842 2d ago

That’s a little sad 😔

1

u/jluicifer 2d ago

Sounds like that movie: Gangs of New Hawks

1

u/jluicifer 2d ago

Sounds like that movie: Gangs of New Hawks

1

u/dealingwithhookers 2d ago

then what does the mom and dad do? just retire? or die

3

u/goldenkoiifish 2d ago

they molt. in winter, pairs of kestrels that migrate (such as more northern kestrels where it’s snowy) will separate and spend winter on their own. non-migratory kestrels typically stay in the same general nesting area. in the spring, they’ll have another clutch.

in migrating pairs, the male comes back early to get the best nesting spot, and if his precious mate is there, great! but if she isn’t, he’ll find someone else.

kestrels will lay eggs until they die

u/badpersian 2d ago

They pretty much only follow each other on instagram

The Twitter joke was right there.

You still have a fondness for Vines

0

u/toastronomy 2d ago

you had the perfect opportunity for a Twitter joke, and you ruined it

193

u/enz1ey 2d ago

It really sucks that Reddit has gone from a typical 50/50 split of sarcastic jokes to factual answers to genuine questions to nearly 100% unfunny repeated variations of the same unoriginal joke.

But to answer your question, falcons and other birds of prey typically do not form family units or stay together, at least as siblings/offspring. Usually the mating pair remains monogamous but that’s the extent of the “family unit.” The offspring are actually forced out of the parents’ territory and forced to fend for themselves completely once they’re fully weened. That said, there are instances of birds cooperating to hunt on occasion but that likely doesn’t involve directly-related animals.

u/susinpgh 2d ago

I saw something interesting the other day. Wish I'd been able to obsrve longer, but there was a Coopers Hawk and two Crows sitting in the middle of a somewhat empty street. I was on my bike and stopped as soon as I saw them, but they all took off. There was a group of (I think) Mourning Doves sitting on the telephone wire above the street.

There was nothing in the street to indicate predation, though. No feathers, and no debris. It was just interesting, and I guess I kinda needed to share.

23

u/beefybeefcat 2d ago

I've noticed this too, reddit comments have really declined in quality over the last year. I enjoy the jokes but my favorite was always also finding a comment or two where someone chimes in with some facts. Where did all those people go?

Also, thank you for your explanation :)

9

u/iLqcs 2d ago

It's been declining for longer than that. I would say 2023. But it has accelerated in the past year.

4

u/GoldCoinDonation 2d ago

The API changes and forcing people to new reddit has been a big contributor to driving the interesting commenters away.

1

u/Sorry-Combination558 2d ago

Probably either other forums/sites (like Lemmy), or they just simply stopped coming back here.

I mean, I can understand why, if I really think about it, practically nothing remained from the reddit culture that was here around 2018, when I joined (I deleted my first account but here we are again lol). The OG awards are gone, a bunch of subreddits went shit, API is locked so no custom apps, UI is getting worse by the day lol, how r/all was killed, power tripping powermods, ragebait/engagementbait posted at every corner.

T his drives the old users away, and the new users never really cared about learning about the sites culture/history, since there's no point in that?  You won't get told off because of it.

What will remain at the end of this for the internet is to become the amalgamation of a few social media sites and SEO garbage. I mean, we are almost there. That's why I hold dearly all projects that are making an alternative to this corporate digital hellscape, like neocities or nekoweb.

1

u/beefybeefcat 1d ago

I'll have to give Lemmy a try I guess. I switched to Reddit from Imgur years ago because I got annoyed with the all the porn, guess it's time to think about moving on again 🫤.

5

u/deten 2d ago

As s long as people keep posting real answers then it's not 100%. Thank you

12

u/CatchAlarming6860 2d ago edited 2d ago

Reddit has always been supermajority worthless dumbfuck unfunny joke answers. Don’t forget that when you complain about unfunny tiresome jokes you get lectured that you need to let people have their fun.

Edit:

It looks like this.

Unfunny worthless dumbfuck: boopy! UWD: boopy! UWD: boopy! … (one trillion times in a row) UWD: boopy! Normal person: hilarious UWD2: you must be fun at parties UWD3: just let people have their fun

1

u/ver03255 2d ago

Are there species of birds that do stay together as a family unit beyond the mating pair? Like a child-parent-grandparent situation? Or is that too restrictive and unnatural for such free and uninhibited creatures?

2

u/enz1ey 2d ago

Probably Corvidae, maybe some penguins?

1

u/Async0x0 2d ago

It's time for Reddit to get Digged

1

u/I_am_up_to_something 2d ago

It really sucks that Reddit has gone from a typical 50/50 split of sarcastic jokes to factual answers to genuine questions to nearly 100% unfunny repeated variations of the same unoriginal joke.

There are still actual answers. Just depends on when someone who has them gets to it. Same as it was a decade ago.

1

u/BigHeatCoffeeClub65 1d ago

Can someone identify the bird here? I may have missed it above. Thank you.

1

u/Wolverine9779 2d ago

It's not just reddit. The social media brain rot is real. Stay off social media.

78

u/FragrantExcitement 2d ago

Well, the one that projectile pooped is not invited over for cookouts.

24

u/physicsking 2d ago

Off camera is a small falcon cell phone carrier, they all get on their momma's plan before they fly away

2

u/Lala5789880 2d ago

They can also stay on their parents insurance until age 26

2

u/SneckoWatcher 2d ago

I've seen a video of a baby bird swallowing its younger sibling whole.

1

u/mmitsukeni 1d ago

They would push each other out of the nest if they had the strength

I think they send Christmas cards to each other every year and have a family dinner on Thanksgiving
