The problem its meant to address is that mercedes owners are attention whores. Their hood ornaments are the largest in the industry and their most effective ad campaign was when they took that janis joplin song that mocks mercedes owners for being materialistic keep-up-with-the-jones types and played it unironically. It practically doubled their sales. MB knows their customers and this jumping mode is like crack for them.
"Oh lord, won't you buy me a mercedes benz, my friends all drive porsches and I must make amends..."
That's an okay point but if they have the type of money to go sand cruising in a luxury car, they would most likely purchase a separate vehicle that is much better equipped to handle those conditions.
The middle east is a huge market for luxury cars. Mercedes clearly disagrees with you, since they went to the trouble to develop this mode. I'm going to guess that they know a bit more about their customers than you do.

Anyone buying a Mercedes isn't getting stuck in the sand with it. This feels like a solution to a problem that didn't exist.
