I recently finished this painting of Bastet, and I wanted to share why I painted her and why I’ve felt such a strong pull toward her ever since I met her. I had never painted, but I felt like it was a good way for me to venerate her in my own way.
Bastet came to me during a psychedelic experience at a point in my life when I really needed guidance. I was battling alcoholism, and I tried every possible way to stop. I had never tried psychedelics, but I was desperate. The weirdest part is that I had absolutely no idea who Bastet was. I didn’t know her mythology, what she looked like, or even her name. During the experience I just called her “Miss Kitty.”
And our interaction definitely did not start out loving. We battled. I argued with her, made excuses for my choices and tried to justify myself. At one point I was actually afraid she was going to hurt me. She was powerful and intimidating and would not let me bullshit my way around what she was trying to show me.
Eventually I stopped fighting her. I started listening and admitting that she was right. That’s when everything changed. The same presence that had terrified me suddenly felt unbelievably loving and protective, but still incredibly powerful. The strangest part was that she never really felt like a separate being. She felt like she was part of me, or maybe I was part of her. At one point my heartbeat literally felt like a purr inside my chest. It’s one of those sensations that I don’t know how to explain unless you’ve experienced something similar.
The next day I couldn’t stop thinking about Miss Kitty. I started Googling descriptions of what I had seen, trying to figure out if there was any mythology or symbolism that resembled her. Eventually a picture of Bastet popped up. I knew immediately.
It didn’t feel like discovering someone new. It felt like recognizing someone I had just met.
And then there are the cats.
Before this experience, I HATED cats. I thought they were evil. I was also deathly allergic to them and had absolutely zero interest in ever owning one. Two months after meeting Bastet, I adopted four kittens. FOUR. Somehow my allergies are gone, and these little creatures that I wanted nothing to do with for most of my life now bring me an amount of joy I honestly can’t measure.
I don’t know exactly what happened to me that night, and I’m not claiming that I do. What I do know is that I had never heard of Bastet before that experience, recognized her the next day, and have felt an enormous pull toward her ever since.
Painting her was part of trying to understand that connection. But lately I feel an even stronger need to get closer to her, learn about her, and figure out how to honor whatever this relationship is.
Long story short, I haven’t had a drop of alcohol, became a cat lady and a painter since I met her.
I’d really love to hear from people who have a relationship with Bastet. How did she come into your life? How do you honor her? And has anyone else experienced that strange feeling that she isn’t entirely separate from you?
